Released on November 4, 2025 by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the latest edition places PUP at #671 overall in Asia, ranking #116 in Southeast Asia, #8 among Philippine universities, and #2 among State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in the country.

This milestone comes amid a record-breaking expansion of the rankings, which now feature 1,526 institutions across Asia—up from 984 in 2025, 856 in 2024, and 760 in 2023. Despite the addition of hundreds of new universities each year, PUP has shown remarkable relative improvement in its standing. In proportional terms, accounting for the expanding pool of ranked institutions, PUP’s position has advanced significantly: from 76% in 2023 (midpoint 575.5/760) to 67% in 2024 (575.5/856), 56% in 2025 (550.5/984), and now 44% in 2026 (671/1,526). This progress highlights PUP’s ability to strengthen its global competitiveness amid growing regional participation. A total of 35 Philippine institutions were featured in the 2026 rankings, with PUP maintaining its position as a key player in the national higher education ecosystem and excelling as the #2 SUC behind University of the Philippines.

Sustained strong QS Stars ratings from 2023 to 2026
Complementing its success in the QS Asia rankings, PUP has also maintained consistent performance in the QS Stars Ratings from 2023 to 2026, sustaining its 3-Star overall rating while earning high distinctions in several key areas. Amid the shift from the QS Stars Version 5.2 (v5.2) to the updated Version 6 (v6) criteria, PUP demonstrated remarkable adaptability and resilience—upholding its institutional strengths and identifying areas for strategic growth under the new global assessment framework.

Throughout the four-year period, PUP showed exceptional stability in Employability, consistently earning 5 Stars (2023–2026)—a reflection of the University’s strong industry linkages, job-ready graduates, and alignment of academic programs with labor market needs. Similarly, Facilities and Online Learning maintained a 5-Star rating across all four years, highlighting PUP’s effective digital learning systems and accessible educational environment.

The University also achieved 5 Stars in Good Governance in both 2025 and 2026, marking a milestone in its commitment to transparent, accountable, and participatory leadership. These sustained ratings affirm PUP’s institutional maturity and dedication to continuous improvement.

As the QS Stars v6 methodology took effect in 2024, new weightings placed greater emphasis on the “Learning Experience”, research productivity, sustainability, and internationalization. Under this revised evaluation, PUP’s Teaching rating, which stood at 4 Stars from 2023 to 2025, adjusted to 3 Stars in 2026, reflecting the more rigorous standards and expanded criteria that now include student engagement, pedagogical innovation, and global learning exposure.

In the area of Global Engagement, PUP recorded a modest improvement—from 1 Star (2023–2025) to 2 Stars in 2026—indicating progress in establishing international linkages, mobility programs, and global collaborations. The University also maintained a 4-Star rating in Research and Academic Development since its inclusion in 2024, showcasing a growing research culture and faculty scholarship.

Meanwhile, Social Impact ratings fluctuated from 3 Stars (2023–2024) to 4 Stars (2025) before returning to 3 Stars (2026) as the assessment criteria expanded under v6 to include sustainability and community outcomes.

In elective categories, Inclusiveness maintained 4 Stars (2023–2025)—affirming PUP’s role as a socially responsive and inclusive public institution—while the Arts category debuted in 2025 with a 3-Star rating, sustained through 2026. PUP’s specialized programs also earned specialist criteria rating in Program Strength, with commendations for the Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics (2024) and Computer and Information Systems (2026).

Commitment to Quality and Global Alignment
The Polytechnic University of the Philippines voluntarily participates in international rankings such as the QS World University Rankings and QS Stars to benchmark its performance against global standards, identify areas for improvement, and enhance its visibility on the world stage. Guided by its vision to be the National Polytechnic University—a university of transformation and excellence—and its mission to provide inclusive and equitable quality education while promoting lifelong learning opportunities through excellence in instruction, research, extension, and production, PUP remains steadfast in its commitment to national and global development.

Through these initiatives, the University strengthens its capacity to attract international partnerships, foster research collaborations, and develop globally competitive and socially responsible graduates. (“Maáram Talks was born out of their desire to create meaningful and relevant content that addresses the needs of teachers handling various disciplines in arts, culture, literature, and heritage studies”.)

A highlight of the afternoon was the screening of Sa Ilog Halawod, a 25-minute episode from the Dayaw documentary series. The film explored the epic Hinilawod of the Panay Bukidnon, recorded by anthropologist F. Landa Jocano during the 1950s, running at least 35 hours, and traced the journey of these historic tapes to their new archival home following the epic’s 2024 inscription in the UNESCO Memory of the World Asia-Pacific Register.

Three compelling talks anchored the program, each shedding light on the depth of Visayan oral traditions and their vital connections to contemporary education.

Liby Limoso, Lecturer at West Visayas State University, opened the series with his presentation titled “Exploring the Intricate Genealogies of the Hinilawod.” By tracing the descendants of epic chanters, he explored the intergenerational transmission of knowledge and wisdom, drawing a striking parallel between the endurance of oral traditions and the persistence of political dynasties in modern governance. His talk highlighted how cultural legacies continue to shape identity, authority, and social continuity in today’s communities.

Following this, Asst. Prof. Marilou Morales from the University of Eastern Philippines delivered her presentation, “From Screen to Tongues: Siday Meets the New Media.” She demonstrated how siday—Samar’s vibrant poetic tradition—can thrive in the age of technology through social media and digital storytelling. Morales introduced a student-centered learning plan that integrates poetry performance and multimedia engagement, ensuring that local literary expressions remain relevant and accessible to the younger generation.

Concluding the series, Dr. Maria Jovita Zarate presented “Myth and Magic, Mimesis and Modernity: Close Reading of the Hinilawod.” Her discussion delved into the representation of female characters in the Visayan epic, highlighting lessons on leadership, resilience, and governance. Zarate also shared an innovative lesson plan that connects these ancient narratives with interviews of contemporary women community leaders, encouraging students to draw meaningful insights between mythic wisdom and modern empowerment.

The event closed with an engaging open forum, where educators and cultural advocates discussed practical strategies for integrating place-based curricula into classrooms. The session was also livestreamed on Facebook, extending its reach beyond the physical venue.

The Maáram Talks series contributes directly to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It advances SDG 4 (Quality Education) by promoting inclusive, experiential, and culturally rooted pedagogy; supports SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through strengthened local partnerships and cultural heritage preservation; and aligns with SDG 15 (Life on Land) by cultivating ecological consciousness grounded in indigenous wisdom. Through such initiatives, PUP and UCCA reaffirm their commitment to education that honors the past while building a sustainable and culturally vibrant future. Mesa Campus and stands as the living witness to the University’s growth and transformation over the years.

Standing more than 20 meters and estimated to be more than 50 years old, PUP’s balete tree is the 46th Heritage Tree in Metro Manila.

Symbol of strength, will, and transformation

Dr. Armin S. Coronado, Director of the PUP Research Institute for Science and Technology (RIST), emphasized that the tree embodies the University’s resilience and evolution. Not just a landmark, he said, it is also a symbol of continuity, strength, and the enduring spirit of the Sintang Paaralan.

“For over five decades, the tree has quietly observed the rhythm of University life, from student activism to cultural events, the infrastructure development and academic milestones. So, it stands as a strong symbol of continuity and resilience, representing the collective dedication of past presidents up to the current president and reflecting the University’s enduring spirit rooted in commitment to public service and education,” he stated.

Representing DENR-NCR Regional Executive Director Atty. Michael Drake P. Matias, Production Forest and Management Section Chief, For. Arturo G. Calderon noted that while their Heritage Tree Program aims to identify, protect, and promote historically significant trees, it also hopes to deepen public understanding of the ecological and environmental significance of trees in fighting pollution and climate change.

“Umaasa kami na ang pagkilala ng puno na ito bilang Heritage Tree ay magpa-paalala sa komunidad ng PUP ng kanilang mayamang kasaysayan, magbibigay inspirasyon sa mas malalim na pagpapahalaga sa kalikasan, at magtutulak sa mas maraming programa sa konserbasyon at sustainability.” Calderon added.

(We hope that recognizing this tree as a Heritage Tree will remind the PUP community of their rich history, inspire a deeper appreciation for nature, and encourage more conservation and sustainability programs.)

Commitment to preservation
Organized by RIST in cooperation with the DENR-NCR and the PUP Cultural Heritage Committee, this milestone event was supported by alumni, faculty, student, and union representatives—all of whom pledged their commitment to preserve the legacy of the new Heritage Tree.

The Sintang Paaralan reaffirms its dedication to sustainability and the preservation of both environmental and cultural heritage as stated under the United Nationals Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely No. 4 in Quality Education, No. 11 for Sustainable Cities and Communities, No. 13 in Climate Action, and No. 17 in Partnerships for the Goals. Through this recognition, the University acknowledges the balete tree as both an ecological asset and a cultural symbol.

(Note: Grammar check and English Translation is generated by AI.)

View this article in PUPWebSite Wed, 05 Nov 2025 17:49:00 GMT http://www.pup.edu.ph/news/?go=D6WOI%2ffuNzU%3d Expanding Educational Frontiers Through Erasmus(plus) Exchange in Italy Jason Alvarez, News, Office of International Affairs

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) continues to elevate its global presence and reaffirm its commitment to inclusive and transformative education through the Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility Programme (KA171), in partnership with Italy’s Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna (UNIBO).

This enhanced mobility partnership builds directly upon the achievements of Project FORTH (Formation of Teachers in Challenged Areas in the Philippines)—a groundbreaking Erasmus+ initiative. Project FORTH established a pioneering master’s program designed to equip educators for service in the Philippines challenged and underserved communities.

With support from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Department of Education (DepEd), Project FORTH has evolved beyond its initial EU youth teaching project in Manila into a consortium co-developing a specialized curriculum emphasizing blended learning, transnational cooperation, and immersive experiences in both the Philippines and Europe. The current KA171 mobility is a direct outgrowth of this successful foundation.

Expanding Academic Mobility and Expertise Exchange
Through the new Erasmus+ phase, PUP and UNIBO offer expanded student and faculty mobility opportunities that foster cross-cultural understanding, collaborative research, and innovative pedagogical approaches integrating local and global perspectives.

This academic year’s international exchange features Jason J. Alvarez, LPT—a graduate student in the Master of Arts in Education major in Teaching in Challenged Areas (MAED-TCA) pursuing studies at UNIBO’s Giovanni Maria Bertin Department of Educational Sciences. His academic work centers on inclusive pedagogies and educational innovation, complemented by cultural immersion and research aligned with his master’s thesis.

Another key element of this exchange was the faculty mobility of Prof. Dr. Ma. Junithesmer D. Rosales, LPT. She is the former dean of the College of Education and a faculty member in both MAED-TCA and Master of Arts in English Language Teaching (MAELT) programs in PUP.

From October 15 to 28, 2025, Dr. Rosales served as a Visiting Professor at UNIBO’s Giovanni Maria Bertin Department of Educational Sciences, where she delivered specialized lectures on critical topics like multiculturalism, inclusion, and gender that are central to the Philippine educational context—facilitating a deeper, two-way intercultural learning experience for the UNIBO Master’s and PhD students.

Both student and faculty mobilities were selected through a competitive, merit-based process involving application review, academic evaluation, and panel interviews. The mobility program remains open to qualified graduate students at the College of Education’s MAED-TCA and MAELT programs.

Advancing Global Education Goals
Founded in 1088, UNIBO is widely recognized as the oldest university in the Western world and one of Europe’s leading academic institutions, ranking first in Italy in the Education field. Upholding its Latin motto, “Nourishing Mother of Studies,” UNIBO remains a pillar of scholarly excellence, innovation, and intercultural dialogue.

The PUP–UNIBO collaboration aligns powerfully with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly Quality Education (SDG 4), Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17). By connecting global academic experiences with locally responsive education, this partnership advances PUP’s vision of cultivating educators who are globally competent yet deeply rooted in their communities. Through the Erasmus+ program, the Sintang Paaralan reaffirms its leadership in fostering inclusive, transformative, and globally engaged higher education.

For more information on Erasmus+ and related international programs, contact the University’s Office of International Affairs.

View this article in PUPWebSite Wed, 05 Nov 2025 17:47:00 GMT http://www.pup.edu.ph/news/?go=Qn8iubWXpqU%3d The Comeback of Brilliance: PUP Rekindles Academic Spirit in UAC 2025 John Wyne M. Even when challenges arise, they may slow us down—but they never stop our spirit from burning.

A Tradition Reborn

The UAC has always been one of PUP’s proudest traditions. It is an academic arena where intelligence, camaraderie, and analytical skill shine. Its comeback brought together students from across the PUP System, reaffirming their shared pursuit of academic excellence.

This year’s competitions spanned a wide range of disciplines. From General Information, Social Sciences, Philippine History, Culture and the Arts, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Science, Mathematics, and Statistics to Extemporaneous Speaking, Dagliang Talumpati, Debate, and Essay Writing. Each contest tested quick thinking, deep knowledge, sharp articulation, and teamwork, all reflecting the strength of the PUP community.

With the return of the competition also comes the unveiling of a new trophy—an emblem of PUP’s enduring spirit of excellence. Designed by Ar. Ranier L. Biglang-awa, the piece draws inspiration from the University’s iconic logo.

At its core is a star-shaped wooden base crafted from Narra, representing the welcoming and concluding journey of every Iskolar ng Bayan. It stands for quintessence, the highest form of quality and the most perfect example of creation.

Rising above the base are five concentric stainless-steel rings, positioned upward to signify the pursuit and boundless contribution of the university’s infinite wisdom. These are supported and reinforced by three vertical elements that represent the core values PUP continuously upholds: truth, excellence, and wisdom.

Stories of Victory

The 2025 contests produced not just champions but also stories of perseverance and pride across campuses and colleges.

PUP campuses showcased their academic excellence across various quiz bees and competitions, with several teams and individuals emerging as overall champions.

PUP Sto. PUP Ragay proved its strength in the Basic Mathematics Quiz Bee, while PUP Maragondon clinched the top spot in the Basic Statistics Quiz Bee.

The College of Science (COS) secured the overall title in the Social Sciences Quiz Bee, and the College of Social Sciences and Development (CSSD) and the Computer and Information Sciences (CCIS) both demonstrated its expertise by winning the Philippine History, Culture, and the Arts Quiz Bee and General Information Contest, respectively.

In the communication and literary categories, the College of Communication (COC) captured the spotlight by winning the Intercollegiate Debate. The judges hailed Julius Ceasar B. Porcia of the College of Accountancy and Finance (CAF) as the overall champion in Extemporaneous Speaking. Mark Rheyneil Z. Hembrado of the College of Education (COED) dominated the Dagliang Talumpati, while Jamie L. Daragay from COS triumphed in Pagsulat ng Sanaysay. Justin Jhon T. Aran of CCIS claimed victory in the Essay Writing Contest.

The festival of excellence culminated with PUP Santo Tomas hailed as the UAC 2025 Overall Champion, followed by the COED and CCIS coming as first and second runners-up, respectively.

Brilliance Across the PUP System

The diversity of winners and runner-ups—from Ragay in Bicol to Santo Tomas in Batangas, from Maragondon in Cavite to Santa Rosa in Laguna, and across Metro Manila’s colleges—underscored one truth: brilliance thrives everywhere in PUP.

Each campus brought pride not only through medals but also through stories of teamwork, determination, and academic excellence. Their victories highlighted PUP’s enduring reputation for producing scholars who combine intellect with integrity and purpose.

More Than Medals

Beyond the trophies and certificates, UAC 2025 reignited the fire of the Iskolar ng Bayan—a reminder that true victory lies not only in winning but in striving together for knowledge and service.

Each correct answer and eloquent argument symbolized resilience; each round of applause reaffirmed the unity and brilliance of the PUP community.

As the curtains closed, the contests left more than a list of champions—they rekindled a legacy. UAC 2025 proved that the intellectual spirit of PUP will continue to shine brightly, inspiring generations of scholars to come.

The comeback of the UAC was more than a return. It was a rekindling—proof that the PUPian spirit, once lit, will always shine through.

2025 UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC CONTESTS LIST OF WINNERS

RANK

NAME

COLLEGE / CAMPUS / UNIT

Essay Writing Contest

Champion

Justin Jhon T.
