President Manuel M. Muhi delivered an inspiring address, highlighting the university’s journey with the theme “Malayo pa, pero malayo na”.

His message emphasized the accomplishments of PUP over the years and the path forward as the university continues to strive for greater success and impact in Philippine education.

From Humble Beginnings to a National Leader
President Muhi began by reflecting on PUP’s origins, tracing the university’s roots back to its founding as the Manila Business School in 1904. Originally established to provide business education aligned with the needs of the workforce, PUP has evolved through the decades, adapting to meet the changing demands of Philippine society.

After becoming the Philippine College of Commerce in 1952 and finally transforming into the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in 1978, the university now stands as one of the country’s largest and most respected institutions for higher learning.

Celebrating Academic Excellence and Social Impact
As PUP celebrates 120 years, it takes pride in a legacy of academic excellence and social impact. President Muhi noted that PUP has consistently produced topnotchers and achievers in various fields, and recently earned recognition as one of the top seven universities in the Philippines in the 2024 QS World University Rankings for Asia. This achievement reflects PUP’s growing reputation as a global institution committed to fostering excellence and addressing the needs of society.

During the event, President Muhi also paid tribute to the past leaders of PUP whose vision and leadership laid the groundwork for the university’s success. These leaders, he emphasized, championed the values of accessible education, academic rigor, and service to the Filipino people. “Their vision continues to guide us today,” he said, “reminding us of the importance of building on their legacy as we chart our future.”

A Message from PUP Alumnus Jonathan Batangan
Among the distinguished guests was Jonathan Batangan, Executive Director of the Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation, Inc., and former FVP and Group Head of Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Brokers. As a proud alumnus of PUP, Batangan shared heartfelt words about the university’s impact on his life and the lives of countless others.

“Today, we honor the 120 years of an institution that has not only opened the minds of countless individuals but also made a lasting, humanistic contribution to our nation—a hundred and twenty years of success, dedication, and profound love for country,” he stated.

Reflecting on his journey, Batangan expressed his pride and gratitude. “PUP has not only shaped my own journey but has profoundly touched countless lives, playing a vital role in the transformation of society. Truly, it stands as a bastion of hope and positive change.”

He continued, “PUP is more than a university; it is a movement—a catalyst for change both in our society and across the globe. At the forefront of critical issues, it provides a platform for action and debate, fostering leaders who make a meaningful impact in every corner of our nation.”

Batangan’s words resonated deeply with the audience, particularly when he spoke of the lasting influence of PUP alumni: “In every province and city of the Philippines, you will find a PUPian committed to planting the seeds of meaningful change. PUP consistently produces leaders and changemakers who possess not only technical knowledge but also a strong sense of social justice.”

PUP’s Vision 120 years and Beyond
Highlighting the role of the entire PUP community, President Muhi called for unity and collective effort to achieve PUP’s ambitious goals. He urged students, faculty, staff, and alumni to come together in support of the university’s mission, especially as it seeks to gain full recognition as the National Polytechnic University of the Philippines.

“The journey ahead requires all of us,” he said. “Together, we will not only maintain our standing but will soar even higher.”

President Muhi shared PUP’s plans for the future, underlining key initiatives in the 2024 University Development Plan. These include:

Enhanced Teaching and Learning: The university aims to keep its curricula responsive to the needs of the nation and industry, preparing students for both academic and personal success.

Accreditation and Quality Assurance: To raise educational standards, PUP is focused on achieving national and international accreditation, a process that is already underway in several departments.

Expansion of Education on Wheels and the Open University System: Building on the success of Education on Wheels, initiated during the pandemic, PUP seeks to reach more underserved communities. The Open University System will also expand, providing working students with greater opportunities for professional growth.

Research and Extension Initiatives: PUP aims to strengthen its research focus on social responsibility and innovation. Plans include building more partnerships and establishing a Scopus-indexed journal to promote global knowledge production by PUP faculty.

Reflecting on the university’s 120-year history, President Muhi emphasized that, while much has been achieved, the journey is far from over. “We have come a long way, but there is still much more to accomplish,” he said. “With love for PUP and dedication to our mission, we will continue to bring distant dreams closer and make the impossible possible.”

View this article in PUPWebSite Wed, 30 Oct 2024 17:26:00 GMT http://www.pup.edu.ph/news/?go=AZO9bf%2fGh1A%3d BSCOE Batch 2004 and Cicerone Travel & Events Management donate University infoboard Melanie Jimenez-Reyes, News, Communication Management Office

In celebration of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines’ 120th founding anniversary, alumni from BSCOE Batch 2004 and Cicerone Travel & Events Management contributed generously to enhance the campus facilities. Maria, PUP Maragondon, PUP Mulanay, PUP Pulilan, PUP San Juan, PUP Sta. Rosa, and PUP Taguig, took the stage to provoke interest in judges and encourage them to try their product. They were given 10 minutes for video presentation and a five-minute Question and Answer portion for each presenter.

The panel of judges for this occasion consists of Victorino S. Illescas Jr., Marketing Manager/Director of Oriental Coffee Alliance, Inc., Cloyd Cunanan, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Area 51 Information Technology Solutions, and Dr. Cindy F. Out of the 17 participants, PUP Pulilan’s Quackstil stood tall as the winners and won the P50,000 cash prize. Meanwhile PUP San Juan’s Coconut Fiber Pot bagged the second-place award and the P35,000 prize. And the Technomore product from PUP Taguig ranked third and collected P25,000.

Quackstil team leader, Ahlinh T. Mañego discussed the intricacies of their product—a pastil made from duck meat, an item readily available in their area.

Mañego also stated that they want to create a delicious and nutritious alternative to the popular Chicken Pastil while raising awareness towards incorporating it into the Filipino diet as most ducks are cultivated for its eggs, not for its meat. Further, they want to increase the business opportunities of the duck farmers and suppliers in Pulilan by takin advantage of the abundant duck meat in their area, helping the community in the process.

“The purpose po first is simply ma-empower namin ang community ng Pulilan. By doing this, makakatulong kami sa local duck farmers and also if ang business lumago, we can also give livelihood to our Pulileños,” she uttered.

(The purpose first is simply to empower the community of Pulilan. By doing this, we can help local duck farmers and, if the business grows, we can also provide livelihood for our fellow Pulileños.)

Quackstil team leader credited PUP Pulilan, particularly their adviser, Prof. Joanna Marie G. Bernardo, for supporting and helping them perfect their business plan, ensuring that their project is feasible and available for production.

“Tinulungan po nila kami sa pag-formulate, sa pag-iisip kung tama ba na iyon ang product na gagawin namin, tama ba na kailangan ba namin talaga na i-pursue ang product na naisip namin. Tinulungan nila kami i-formulate ang product hanggang sa naging perfect po iyon since maraming trial and error ang kailangan gawin para po mabuo ang Quackstil,” she said.

(They helped us in formulating, in thinking if it was really the right product for us to create, and if it was truly necessary to pursue the product we had in mind. They assisted us in formulating the product until it became perfect since we had to go through a lot of trial and error to develop Quackstil)

With this win, Quackstil will proceed with their implementation next semester where they turn it into a fully-fledged business and hope that with enough capital, they may be able to sustain it for the future.

2024 Grand Innovation Exhibit
Meanwhile in the GIE, 47 entries from different campuses across the PUP System, including Alfonso, Bataan, Biñan, Calauan, Maragondon, Mulanay, Pulilan, San Juan, Sta. Their teams won P40,000 and P25,000, accordingly. Meanwhile, the Rice Paragis Cofftea of PUP Calauan took home the second place and the P30,000 cash award.

Participants of GIE discussed the purpose and advocacy behind their inventions. Mary Joyce T. Mateo, a 4th year Entrepreneurship student from PUP Sta. Maria Campus said that her team’s “Veggie Munch’ Arap” centered on encouraging their customers to eat quality, affordable, and healthy food “without any genetic ingredients” while assisting the suppliers from their community which consists of farmers. Meanwhile, Joel P. Malabanan, also a fourth year student in the same course but from Calauan, added that theirs advocated towards making an item that is accessible to all ages with a plant that is native in their area—a tea derived from Moringa (malunggay) leaves.

“Isa sa aming mga value proposition na makapag-provide kami ng healthy beverages na hindi lang pwede sa matanda kundi all ages, pwede siya sa all ages. Tapos matulungan din ang mga local farmers sa amin, doon sa bayan namin na magkaroon sila ng income. Extra income kasi sa kanila kami kumukuha ng mga Moringa leaf,” Malabanan shared.

(“One of our value propositions is that we want to provide healthy beverages that are suitable not only for adults but for all ages. They can be consumed by all ages. Additionally, we want to help local farmers in our town to have an income. It provides extra income for them as we source Moringa leaves from them.”)

Both students also expressed their gratitude towards the University for providing them with an avenue to display their ingenuity as Mateo has stated that it gave them additional lessons that benefits everyone. Malabanan then expounded it by stating “Nagkakaroon kami ng mgaexperience katulad nito na nao-open ang mind namin sa kung paano namin mas lalawakan ang pag-iisip naming na makaimbento ng mga product. And thank you rin sa PUP kasi naco-commercialize namin ang mga product na inilalaban namin dito.”

(We have events like this that open our minds on how we can broaden our thinking to invent products. Without them, he said, the University will cease to exist.

“Maraming salamat sa inyong sipag, dedikasyon, at pagmamahal sa Pamantasan. Ang inyong walang-sawang suporta ang nagbibigay lakas sa PUP upang patuloy na harapin ang mga hamon ng panahon at matagumpay sa bawat pagkakataon. Lahat ng ito ay ating ginawa hindi para sa pansariling interes lamang, ito po ay ginagawa natin sa ngalan ng public service,” he stated.

(Thank you very much for your hard work, dedication, and love for the University. Your unwavering support is what empowers PUP to continuously face the challenges of the times and succeed at every opportunity. We have done all this not for personal interests alone, but in the name of public service.)

The President then invited everyone to actively participate in the activities and occasions in store for this month in observance of the University’s founding anniversary.

As part of the 120th anniversary celebration, the PUP Campus Ministry, led by Fr. Stephen Mifsud presided over an Ecumenical Thanksgiving Mass as a means of reflection for the blessings that the University received over the past 12 decades. It was a way to express gratitude, and to reaffirm its service to the Filipino people.

Meanwhile, the University Center for Culture and the Arts (UCCA) held the traditional Cultural Night. It was held on the entire PUP System today, September 26, 9AM.

Also meant to fortify their defenses for the possible “Big One,” a potential magnitude 7.2 earthquake that may occur in the West Valley Fault which covers Central Luzon, Metro Manila, and Calabarzon, students, faculty, and administrative staff from various PUP campuses have actively participated in the Duck, Cover, and Hold exercise as they go to their designated evacuation area while the University’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Focal Persons facilitated the proceedings and conducted mock inspection in buildings and facilities.

Associate Professor Christo Rey S. Albason, Student Activity Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator of the Office of Student Services (OSS), stated in his “Mensahe ng Katatagan” that while disasters are uncontrollable, there are still ways to ensure our survival. Through this activity, he said, we can minimize the damages it may cause.

“Ang mga ganitong gawain ay isa sa makakapagbigay ng kaalaman at kasanayan sa paghahanda upang mas maging malay tayo sa posibilidad ng sitwasyon.”

(These kinds of activities are one of those that can provide knowledge and skills in preparation, allowing us to become more aware of possible situations)

Zuriel D. Aguilar, PUP Red Cross Youth Council Adviser, in his “Mensahe ng Pagpapatuloy”, has reintroduced the Philippine Red Cross’s 4P’s of emergency response that are crucial in the face of calamity—Predict (bracing for impending dangers), Plan (creating a comprehensive action for possible disasters), Prepare (readying for possible dangers brought by disasters), and Practice (regularly partaking in disaster awareness event such as the NSED).

University employees noted the significance of this occasion in ensuring that the PUP Community is disaster-ready and equipped with the knowledge necessary for their survival. Assistant Professor Leomar P. Requejo, DRI’s Forecasting, Early Warning and Dissemination Section and the University Safety Officer, shared that it also helps in turning disaster awareness into a university culture.

“Sa earthquake we cannot predict kung kailan siya mangyayari, kung gaano siya kalakas, or kung ano ang scale ng damage nito. What we can do is prepare for it, i-practice kung ano ang gagawin, i-practice ang execution ng mangyayari. Kasi sa pamamagitan noon, mas masesecure natin na ang community natin ay alam nila ang gagawin nila. Male-lessen natin ang possibility na may mangyayaring masama,” he added.

(In an earthquake, we cannot predict when it will happen, how strong it will be, or the scale of its damage. What we can do is prepare for it, practice what needs to be done, and rehearse how things may unfold. Because through that, we can better ensure that our community knows what to do. We can lessen the possibility of something bad happening.)

Requejo’s sentiments were similarly echoed by his fellow employees. Meanwhile, Cyel Amatorio of the Gender and Development Office (GADO) mentioned “Participating in safety procedures such as the quarterly nationwide earthquake drill helps the PUP community to prepare for an emergency. It familiarizes everyone with the procedures and protocols, while also practising their quick response.”

(So that we can all be aware, in case a disaster strikes, we will already know what to do. We can avoid accidents.)

The Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) is a quarterly program piloted by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and Office of Civil Defense (OCD) to help promote and earthquake readiness and disaster response local government units, offices, and schools.

[Note: All English translations are generated from ChatGPT 3.5/4]

View this article in PUPWebSite Thu, 26 Sep 2024 17:28:00 GMT http://www.pup.edu.ph/news/?go=oYqR2nlTX%2bA%3d
