Quality Engineering Programs: PTC Awards Tier 1 Status to the Sintang Paaralan

The Quality Assurance Center (QAC), following the successful assessment and evaluation of engineering practices, led the awarding ceremony of the College of Engineering’s (COE) attainment of the Philippine Technological Council’s (PTC) Tier 1 status at Silid Lakan Dayang, University Library on April 24.

The COE's success signifies the quality of its engineering programs and ensures national recognition and alignment with the Washington Accord—an international agreement among bodies responsible for accrediting engineering degree programs.

University President Dr. Manuel M. Muhi expressed his gratitude to the PTC for this achievement and to the QAC and COE for their hard work on making this accomplishment possible.

“This reflects our collective commitment to excellence, to global standards in engineering education. We are now recognized under the Washington Accord, which means our engineering programs are substantially equivalent among signatory nations, and this will facilitate the mobility of our graduates, allowing them to work and be recognized globally.” Muhi said.

Muhi added that this recognition advances PUP's goal of becoming the country's leading polytechnic university, contributing significantly to polytechnic and engineering education by elevating local programs to international standards.

QAC Director Dr. Sanjay P. Claudio noted that the University’s quality assurance goal is not just to achieve local accreditation, but also international recognition to raise education standards for the welfare of the Iskolar ng Bayan.

“We’re not doing this for the sake of rankings,” Claudio said. “We really do all of this, submitting our course programs for external quality assurance, [it’s] because of our students. We believe that quality, first and foremost, is our responsibility. We need to make sure that we’re able to submit and humbly get the opinion, as well as assessment of external accrediting bodies so that we would be able to improve and address all these concerns.”

The Sintang Paaralan, with this achievement, is now the third state university to attain PTC Tier 1 status, following the University of the Philippines and the Batangas State University in this honor.

Following this new accolade, the two offices will soon begin their preparations for the Accreditation and Certification Board for Engineering and Technology (ACBET) visit this September. ACBET, the PTC's accreditation body, will assess PUP's engineering programs for further alignment with Washington Accord standards, helping students and alumni access international engineering practice.

After remarks from Claudio and Muhi, PTC President Engr. Federico A. Monsada discussed the organization's history and role in advancing engineering education, as well as the field's significance to societal development. Assistant Director for Institutional and International Quality Assurance Dr. Luisito L. Lacatan then delivered the closing remarks, emphasizing that "excellence is not a destination, but a continuing pursuit."

Also present to witness the proceedings were University officials, Executive Vice President and Vice President for Planning and Finance Prof. Alberto C. Guillo and Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs Edelyn M. Mariano-Guillo, alongside accreditation leaders ACBET Chair Dr. Lydia G. Tansinsin and Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) Chair Dr. May Rose C. Imperial. PUP deans, COE officials, Quality Assurance coordinators, and PTC members also attended.

Future Engineers Ignite Innovation Through ‘SIDLAK,’ Heading to Poland for Global Eco-Marathon Competition

As the countdown begins for the Shell Eco-marathon Autonomous Driving Competition in Poland on June 24–28, 2026, a team of young PUP student-innovators is accelerating their preparations. They’re bringing not just a prototype vehicle, but a vision of sustainable engineering built from purpose, resilience, and ingenuity.

Representing the country as the sole Philippine team, PUP WIRED—the university-wide organization and official Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineer (IEEE) student branch, in partnership with TESDA RTC NCR—has assembled a multidisciplinary group of engineering students to compete in one of the world’s most prestigious energy-efficiency challenges. Their entry, a prototype electric vehicle named SIDLAK—a Visayan term meaning to shine, radiate, or brilliance—captures the team’s aspiration to illuminate the future of mobility through innovation. Leading the team is Cristian Marl Maranon (BS Electrical Engineering, 4th year) as Team Manager, alongside Angel Ortega (BS Electrical Engineering, 4th year) as Technical Lead. The engineering backbone of SIDLAK is supported by John Louis Alano (BS Mechanical Engineering, 4th year) as Mechanical Lead, Dwayne Brayan Cahilig (BS Mechanical Engineering, 4th year) as Fabrication Lead, and Chris Celine Tibule (BS Electrical Engineering, 3rd year) handling braking systems. Completing the team are Rodeliene Aloc (BS Electrical Engineering, 4th year) for ergonomics, Ian Lourenz Santos (BS Electrical Engineering, 4th year) for electrical systems, and software leads Daniel Cosare (BS Computer Engineering, 3rd year) and John Paul Curada (BS Computer Science, 3rd year). Guiding them are faculty advisers Engr. Benson Pulga, Engr. Kevin Suliva, and Dr. Edison Mojica.

At the heart of their journey is a shared mission to redefine mobility through sustainability. For Maranon, the competition is more than a technical pursuit, it is a platform to elevate Filipino talent on the global stage. “We’ll try our best to win this competition and show that Filipino and PUPian talent can be internationalized and proudly represented abroad,” he shared. The inspiration behind SIDLAK is grounded in real-world challenges. Amid the global energy crisis, the team recognized the urgency of developing cleaner alternatives. Their solution: an electric vehicle prototype built not from costly imports, but from recycled materials sourced from previous projects and scrap within the college—a testament to both resourcefulness and environmental responsibility. “As future engineers, we want to make the future sustainable. We want to make it coal-free, carbon-free, and focus more on the engineering and efficiency side so we really want to push this innovation further,” Maranon emphasized. The project reflects a deeper commitment—not only to technological advancement but also to long-term impact. For PUP WIRED, SIDLAK is just the beginning. “As an organization, we want to push this project to more heights and to join more competition yearly about sustainability,” he added.

Their work directly contributes to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). By developing an energy-efficient, low-emission vehicle using recycled materials, the team demonstrates how student-led innovation can address global environmental challenges while promoting sustainable industrial practices. As they prepare to represent the Philippines on the international stage, the team is also extending an invitation to the wider community support. “We would like to invite all PUPians, kapwa iskolar ng bayan to cheer us on… as the sole team and university from the Philippines to join the Shell Eco Marathon in Poland. We also would like to invite companies, especially renewable companies, who would want to support us on this initiative,” Maranon called. The College of Human Kinetics marked a defining moment for sports science education with the blessing and inauguration of its Exercise and Science Sports Laboratory on April 17, 2026, at the PUP Sta. Mesa Campus, CHK Laboratory Room. More than a ceremonial opening, the event signaled the arrival of a long-envisioned space where science, performance, and education intersect—built through years of persistence, collaboration, and institutional support.

University officials, faculty, and guests gathered to witness the unveiling of a facility designed to strengthen instruction, research, and athlete development. The laboratory now stands as a hub for evidence-based training, assessment, and innovation—equipping students and educators with tools that mirror real-world sports science practice.

At the heart of the ceremony was a message from Assistant Professor Antonio F. Enriquez Jr., former Chairperson of the Department of Sports Science, who traced the laboratory’s origins to a vision formed nearly a decade ago. His reflection captured both the struggle and the triumph behind the project:

“A dream that began in 2017 when I was designated as Chair of the Department of Sports Science, kasabay ng pagkakatatag ng BSESS Program. Hindi naging madali ang journey na ito. His message also carried gratitude, recognizing the leadership and collective effort that transformed the vision into reality—from university executives to academic leaders, administrative units, and laboratory personnel. The acknowledgment extended to past and present leadership whose guidance laid the groundwork and sustained the momentum of the project.

“Ang laboratory ito ay hindi lamang isang facility, kundi simbolo ng ating mga pinagdaanan, mga pagsubok, at walang sawang pagsisikap at pagmamahal para sa kalidad na edukasyon.” (This laboratory is not just a facility, but a symbol of our journey, our challenges, and our tireless effort and passion for quality education.)

Following the ribbon-cutting, guests toured the laboratory, witnessing firsthand the equipment and spaces that will support performance testing, rehabilitation, and research. The facility is expected to elevate the learning experience of students under the Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sports Sciences (BSESS) program while strengthening the institution’s contribution to the broader sports and health sector.

In its search for the next generation of Iskolar ng Bayan, several campuses and academic extension programs of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) administered the annual PUP College Entrance Test (PUPCET) throughout March and April.

Campuses in Biñan, Cabiao, Calauan, Caloocan, General Luna, Leyte, Lopez, Mulanay, Pakil, Quezon City, Ragay, San Juan, San Pedro, Sta. Maria, Sta. Rosa, Sto. Tomas, Taguig, and Unisan, welcomed their respective applicants from across the Philippines. This initiative was led by the PUPCET Committee under the joint supervision of Vice President for Student Affairs and Services Prof. Tomas O. Testor and Vice President for Campuses Prof. Pascualito B. Gatan, alongside respective campus directors, faculty, administrative staff, and local government unit (LGU) officials.

Other PUP campuses will conduct their respective PUPCET schedules this May. Campuses in Alfonso, Bansud, Bataan, Maragondon, Parañaque, Pulilan, Sablayan, and Talisay are set to hold their test on various dates. Rice University strengthens academic ties with PUP

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) strengthened its international academic engagement through a strategic partnership with Rice University, one of the leading research universities in the United States. The collaboration was formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) during the visit of internationally renowned nanotechnology expert Pulickel M. Ajayan to the PUP Mabini Campus.

The MOU signing ceremony marked the official launch of the academic partnership between the two institutions. Present during the signing were College of Engineering Dean, Dr. Remedios Ado and representatives from the PUP International Relations Office, reflecting the university’s commitment to strengthening international academic cooperation and expanding opportunities for Filipino students and researchers.

The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration in key areas including joint research initiatives, faculty and student exchanges, internship and immersion opportunities, international conferences, and the exchange of scholarly publications and instructional resources. The partnership is expected to foster interdisciplinary research and academic engagement across multiple fields of study.

Following the signing ceremony, Dr. Ajayan delivered a public seminar titled “Nano-Engineered Materials: Opportunities,” attended by faculty members, researchers, and students from various colleges within the university.

In his lecture, Ajayan explored the transformative potential of nanotechnology and advanced materials in addressing contemporary scientific and technological challenges. The seminar highlighted emerging developments in the design and synthesis of functional nano-engineered materials, including carbon-based systems, boron–nitrogen–carbon materials, two-dimensional materials, and single-atom catalysts.

These materials are opening new frontiers in fields such as energy storage, advanced manufacturing, electronics, and sustainable technologies.

Dr. Ajayan is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading scholars in nanotechnology. Over nearly three decades, he has published more than 1,300 scientific papers and has received over 230,000 citations for his work, demonstrating the global impact of his research in materials science and nanotechnology.

The seminar was followed by an open forum where students engaged Dr. Ajayan in discussions on research careers, graduate study opportunities, and the future of nanotechnology. The exchange provided students with valuable insights into global research trends and encouraged them to pursue advanced studies and interdisciplinary collaboration in science and engineering.

Dormitory Project Begins, Expanding Support for Student-Athletes

Sintang Paaralan commenced the construction of its athletes’ dormitory through a groundbreaking ceremony held on April 15, 2026, at the PUP A. Mabini Campus in Sta. Mesa, Manila, marking a significant milestone in advancing student-athlete welfare and strengthening institutional sports development.

The University implements the project under a design-and-build scheme as part of its continuing efforts to provide adequate facilities and essential support services for its growing population of student-athletes. The initiative ensures compliance with Republic Act No. 1076, which mandates higher education institutions with established sports programs to provide necessary amenities for athletic development.

In an interview, Romulo B. Hubbard, Director of the Sports Development Program Office, highlighted the collective effort behind the initiative and recognized the role of the University’s executive leadership in advancing the project.

“This is truly an effort of the University, especially the EXECOM, to provide what is required by law and to respond to the growing number of athletes in PUP,” Hubbard said. “While the University already has existing dormitories, these are no longer sufficient. This project was initially pushed by VP Tomas O. Testor, with the support of VP Alberto C. Guillo and VP Adam V. Ramilo, to further enhance services for our athletes.”

The University is set to develop three dormitory buildings that will accommodate approximately 200 student-athletes. The project directly addresses current capacity limitations and strengthens the University’s ability to attract and retain athletic talent.

“This development ensures compliance with RA 1076 and, at the same time, will attract more athletes to apply to PUP. With improved facilities, we can further strengthen our teams for future leagues,” he added.

Beyond infrastructure, the initiative underscores PUP’s commitment to holistic student-athlete welfare—recognizing the physical, academic, and socio-economic challenges faced by its athletes, particularly those coming from the provinces.

From the students’ perspective, the dormitory project represents a transformative support system that directly responds to their daily realities. Mariel Abonio, a Bachelor of Science in Sports Science student from the College of Human Kinetics and a member of the PUP softball team, shared her insights:

“Happy and blessed because it will help me and other student-athletes. Every time we go to campus, the money and energy we use in commuting can instead be used for our food if the dormitory is already available.”

She further emphasized the practical benefits of the facility, stating, “It’s a big impact because we can save more money and time when we live inside the campus.”

Abonio also highlighted how proximity to training venues can enhance performance and daily routines. “When you’re always commuting, you have to wake up early for training and classes. Going home takes around 30 minutes to an hour, compared to just a five-minute walk to the dormitory. That means you can still do the things you usually do when you arrive home.”

On balancing academic and athletic responsibilities, she added, “It gives you more time and it’s convenient.”

Looking ahead, Abonio expressed optimism for the initiative and future developments: “I hope all athletes can receive a spot in the dormitory, and more projects will be provided for all student-athletes.”

These insights reflect the broader impact of the project—not only as a physical structure but as a strategic investment in student success, equity, and well-being.

Hubbard further emphasized the project’s significance for students coming from outside Metro Manila. “This will greatly support the welfare and development of our student-athletes. Around 80 percent of them come from the provinces, making this a necessary provision. It also significantly boosts their morale,” he said.

The dormitory project also aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, by creating an enabling environment where student-athletes can better balance academics and sports; SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, through improved living conditions that support rest, recovery, and performance; and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, by providing equitable access to housing and resources for students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.

New Regulation Mandates “No Petting, No Feeding Policy” for PUP cats

To protect the safety and welfare of the PUP community and its resident cats, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), in partnership with the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) through a signed Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), has launched the KabaliCat program. It implements a No Petting, No Feeding Policy to avoid any harmful interaction between humans and cats.

Effective March 26, 2026, the policy prohibits feeding and petting of cats inside the University. Feeding cats human food is discouraged to protect them from health risks. Students, faculty, and staff are also advised to avoid approaching, petting, or carrying cats to prevent injuries and to maintain a safe distance. If any incidents occur, members of the PUP Community are recommended to proceed to the PUP Medical Clinic for treatment and guidance.

Additionally, the University has enacted the Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) initiative to ensure a safe, humane, responsible, and systemic animal care for the approximately 90 cats residing at the PUP Sta. Mesa Campus.

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Caloocan Campus successfully administered its first PUP College Entrance Test (PUPCET) on March 29, 2026, at Caloocan National Science and Technology High School (CalNatSci) as part of its selection process for its first batch of students.

Drawing applicants from the City of Caloocan and nearby areas, the initiative was supported by the Caloocan Schools Division Office, the CalNatSci administration led by Principal Flora T. Trope, and local government unit (LGU) officials.

In a Facebook post, the campus, led by Director Dr. Demelyn E. University officials expressed pride in the achievement, highlighting the leadership of University President Manuel Muhi; Vice President for Research, Extension, and Development (VPRED) Anna Ruby Gapasin; and Assistant Vice President for Research, Extension, and Development (AVPRED) Angelina Enriquez-Borican.

They also emphasized that the recognition serves not only as a celebration of past accomplishments but also as motivation to pursue greater milestones. With a shared vision for excellence, the university aims to further elevate its standing in innovation and research in the coming years.

The recognition also acknowledges the contributions of Dr. Ginno Andres and the former Intellectual Property Management Office (IPMO) to the current Research Management and Intellectual Property Office (RMIPO) under Director Dr. Jackie Urrutia, alongside Innovations and Technology Support Office (ITSO) Chief Engr. Florence Joie Lacsa, Copyright and Licensing Section (CLS) Chief Dr. Mark Anecito Perlas, and faculty and student innovators across the University.

The Silver Cluster Award reflects PUP’s continuous efforts to strengthen its research ecosystem, expand technology transfer initiatives, and promote IP protection. Through collaborative engagement among administrators, faculty, and students, the University has enhanced its role as a hub for innovation and knowledge creation.

This recent accomplishment reinforce PUP’s role as a catalyst for invention and technology transfer in higher education, directly advancing United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 in Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. It also supports global targets: SDG 4 in Quality Education through research capacity-building, SDG 8 in Decent Work and Economic Growth by generating employment opportunities created through these innovations, and SDG 17 for Partnerships for the Goals through multi-stakeholder collaboration.

Looking ahead, the Sintang Paaralan remains devoted to supporting researchers in protecting, commercializing, and maximizing the societal impact of their ideas.

PUP Student-Athlete Honored at National All-Women Sports Awards 2026

Marie June Adriano, a student from College of Human Kinetics – Bachelor of Physical Education and Karate athlete, has been recognized at the national level after being named a Citation Awardee in the All-Women Sports Awards 2026 organized by the Philippine Sports Commission.

Adriano received the award during the ceremony held on March 20, 2026, at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Pasay City. The recognition highlights women athletes who have demonstrated excellence, discipline, and contribution to Philippine sports.

Adriano expressed her appreciation for the recognition, saying she was “very happy and honored to be invited to such a big event for Women’s Month” and “truly grateful to receive this award and be recognized as one of the dedicated women athletes in our country.” She added that as a student-athlete from PUP, the recognition “means a lot to me because it reflects all the hard work, sacrifices, and commitment I’ve given both in my studies and in my sport.”

She also shared the challenges she faced in balancing academics and training, describing that “last year was one of the most difficult times for me as a student-athlete,” as she had to choose between continuing her studies or focusing fully on competitions and training camps. Despite this, she emphasized that “I still chose to continue my studies by taking the maximum units allowed so I wouldn’t have to stop completely while preparing for World Qualification and the SEA Games.”

Adriano acknowledged the people who supported her journey, stating, “I’m very thankful to my National Team Coaches for guiding me with this journey and professors who helped me catch up with my requirements.” She added that “the SDPO and CHK were also very supportive, and that really helped me manage both responsibilities.”

Reflecting on her growth, Adriano shared that “being part of PUP and the KaRadicals community, I’m very grateful because they helped shape me into a more disciplined, resilient, and responsible individual.” She added that her experience taught her “the importance of teamwork, perseverance, and representing not just myself but also my school and community with pride.”

She also offered a message to aspiring Filipina athletes, saying, “Don’t be afraid to try something new like sports. Challenges, problems, and sacrifices are part of the process, but they will help you grow stronger.” She further encouraged them to “always believe in yourself” and remember that “you can succeed both in your studies and in athletics one step at a time.”

Looking ahead, Adriano shared her plans moving forward, stating, “I will continue to use this recognition as motivation to work harder and improve in my sport.” She added, “I want to keep inspiring others, especially young athletes, by showing that with dedication, discipline, and passion, you can achieve your goals,” and affirmed that she will “continue to represent my school and my country with pride through karate.”

Adriano’s recognition contributes to key Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 5 (Gender Equality) by empowering women in sports, SDG 4 (Quality Education) by promoting the balance of academics and athletics, SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through active lifestyles, and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by highlighting opportunities for women athletes.
