UCCA receives full band set from PUP faculty member

Office of Counselling and Psychological Services (OCPS) Director Dr. Rodrigo V. Lopiga has generously donated a full band set worth ₱122,100 to support the artists and members of the University Center for Culture and the Arts (UCCA).

The ceremonial signing of the Deed of Donation took place at the University Amphitheater on Friday, November 29. Dr. Lopiga’s donation includes six (6) electric guitars, an electric drum kit, two (2) amplifiers, a drum set, and instrument wires, all of which will be utilized by the UCCA.

In his statement, Lopiga shared that this donation was a way for him to celebrate his 52nd birthday and give back to the Sintang Paaralan that has played a significant role in his life since his humble beginnings as a college student at PUP.

“Masaya na ako kasi I’m able to put it to good use. Mas marami pang mga artists ang matutulungan nito. Malay natin balang araw, through the use of these instruments, meron tayong maproduce na magagaling na artists na hindi lang dito sa PUP, kundi baka malayo ang kanilang marating. Iyon ang aking dahilan kung bakit ko pinili magbigay,” he said.

UCCA Director Bely R. Ygot mentioned that the donated band set will primarily be used as part of a planned wellness and mental health program through music for PUP employees. It will also be utilized by the PUP Polysound Band for their performances. He assured that the instruments would be put to full use and treated with the utmost care.

Ma. Alleth G. Fernando, Director of the Property and Supplies Management Office, emphasized the importance of taking care of the donated items and university facilities to ensure their longevity and benefit for future generations.

“Ang mga bagay na ibinibigay sa atin, kailangang pag-ingatan natin para hindi lang tayo ang gagamit, may susunod pa sa atin na talented. Mas maganda kung pakiki-iingatan natin yung gamit, hindi lang ang mga dinonate sa atin, kundi lahat ng gamit ng university. Kailangan natin pag-ingatan para doon naman sa mga susunod,” he stated.

University President Dr. Manuel M. Muhi expressed his gratitude for this new development, which will continue to foster the growth of music and arts at the university. He thanked Dr. Lopiga for his generosity and selfless act of giving back to PUP and its students.

“Maraming salamat kay Rodrigo Lopiga para sa kanyang kabutihang-loob at pagbibigay ng isang buong band set para sa Iskolar ng Bayan. Ang donasyon na ito ay malaking tulong sa ating Polysound Band at plano ng UCCA na wellness program. Ito ay magsisilbing daan upang ipagpatuloy pa ang mga programa ng UCCA na nakatuon sa pag-unlad at pagpapahalaga sa sining at musika sa Sintang Paaralan,” he said.

As part of the event, a musical jam session was held in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Amphitheater. Performances included local and international hits by the Harana String Company and the PUP Polysound Band, with President Muhi and Dr. Lopiga also joining in to showcase their musical talents.

Outstanding students, administrative staff, faculty, and campuses honored in annual Gawad Pagkilala

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) - Sta. Mesa held the annual Gawad Pagkilala, Gawad Sinta, and Gawad Lingap Komunidad awarding ceremony at the Bulwagang Balagtas on November 21, 2024, for their notable triumphs as part of the University.

Assistant Vice President for Campuses and Overall Chairman of the 120th Founding Anniversary Activities Assoc. Prof. Roseller M. Malabanan said these events not only celebrated the 12 glorious decades of the University but also honored the awardees (students, faculty, and campus) for their achievements in the field of academic and non-academics, gender and development, and extension.

As part of the commemoration, University President Dr. Manuel M. Muhi emphasized the role of “Natatanging Iskolar” and the youth in shaping not just the university, but the country itself.

“Kayo ang dahilan kung bakit [pati] ang mga guro, kawani at mga opisyales ng unibersidad ay patuloy na nagsusumikap upang mapabuti ang misyong pang-edukasyon at nang sa gayon ay mabubuo ang inyong kamalayan, kaalaman at kasanayan na makakatulong sa inyong pagharap sa isang mapanghamong lipunan,” Muhi said.

(Because of you, the teachers, staff, and university officials continue to strive to improve the educational mission, so that you may develop the awareness, knowledge, and skills that will help you face a challenging society)

The president then stated that the awards are reminders of the PUP Community’s obligation to serve and inspire the people, embodying the university’s motto: Mula Sa’yo, Para sa Bayan, stating “Ang bawat pagkilala at parangal na ibinibigay natin ngayon ay sumasalamin sa obligasyon, talino, at serbisyo na inyong pinamalas sa loob at labas ng PUP.”

Thereafter, Prof. Tomas O. Testor, Vice President for Student Affairs and Services, gave a brief speech about each categorical award throughout the program, highlighting the importance of recognizing “the exemplary achievements” of members of the PUP Community in various fields.

Ralph Reuben Morales, Director for Government Relations for the multinational company Texas Instruments Philippines, and a professorial lecturer at the College of Political Science and Public Administration (CPSPA), shared a heartwarming message about the valuable lessons he learned at the Sintang Paaralan.

“Almost two decades after college, it makes me reflect on the fundamentals that I’ve learned from the Sintang Paaralan which made me stronger. PUP gave us the opportunity to make decisions. It didn’t tell us what to do, but how to decide out of the many critical options in front of us. It made us reflect on what we are made of; from responsibilities in academics to our participation in pressing social issues.” Morales said.

On Gawad Pagkilala sa Natatanging Iskolar ng Bayan, chosen scholars are recognized for their international, national, and regional achievements based on academics, leadership, research and publication, and community involvement. A total of 487 national awards, 200 regional awards, and 79 international awards were conferred to the selected Iskolar ng Bayan.

Assoc. Prof. Jose V. Clutario, Center for Gender Training and Advocacy Chief of the Gender and Development, introduced the Gawad Sinta 2024 award, which recognizes individuals, offices, units, or student organizations that have actively participated in and promoted gender inclusivity and equality, safe spaces, women’s empowerment, and LGBTQIA+ advocacy.

For the Gawad Sinta awards, the recognized awardees included PUP Sta. Maria, Bulacan Campus as the Natatanging Yunit and Kamille Legaspi-Torres, Head of Student Services and GAD Focal Point Person of PUP Sta. Maria Campus, as the Gawad Sinta Natatanging Indibidwal. The PUP Lopez Campus Central Student Council was honored as the Natatanging Samahan ng mga Mag-aaral, while the research Ang Queer Literacy Framework: Isang Pagsusuri sa Pagtuturo ng Panitikang Pambata Gamit ang “Ang Tatay ni Klara at Nanay ni Erwin” at “Ang Ikaklit sa Aming Hardin” by John Paul Sarce from the College of Arts and Letters (CAL) was awarded as the Natatanging Pananaliksik.

Dr. Henry B. Prudente, Center for Extension and Community Linkages Chief of the Extension Management Office (EMO), presented the Gawad Lingap Komunidad, emphasizing the role of PUP as an institution that is steadfast in crafting new initiatives that center on community development.

“As an institution, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines remains steadfast in its commitment to the holistic development of our society, extending beyond the four walls of our classroom. We not only honor the dedication of our faculty, staff, and partners, but also inspire others to engage in meaningful service to the community.” Prudente said.

At the Gawad Lingap Komunidad, Dr. Dorren Arenque of the PUP Ragay Campus won First Place in the Best Extension Project Category with “Project TUMPAK (Tulungan at Ugnayan ng Mamamayan Para sa Kaunlaran).” Respectively, Dr. Mercy Manalo of PUP Mulanay Campus won second place for his “TECHNO-GABAY” and Prof. Renalyn Valdez of the College of Communication placed third as well as being named the Best Extensionist for her project “PUP College of Communication: Salin Kaalaman sa Pamamahayag sa Paaralan Part 3: HIGHLIGHT - Entering a new wave in Journalism: Cultivate, Calibrate, Educate.”

“Ang pagkilalang ito ay walang katumbas na anumang presyo. More than that, mas mahalaga ang pagseserbisyo sa bayan at pagshe-share ng kung anong meron kayo,” Vice President for Research, Extension, and Development Dr. Anna Ruby P. Gapasin stated in her closing remarks.

PwC officially turns over donated bus to PUP for EOW

In the monthly flag raising ceremony held on December 2, the executive committee, students, administrative staff, and faculty of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) witnessed the official turnover of one (1) bus to be used for the Education of Wheels (EOW) program donated by the accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Philippines/Isla Lipana & Co.

Attending from PwC are Chairman and Senior Partner Roderick M. Danao, Chairman Emeritus and Isla Lipana & Co. Foundation President Alex B. Cabrera, PwC Acceleration Center (AC) Manila General Manager Nilesh Sharma, and several key directors and partners.

University President Dr. Manuel M. Muhi expressed his gratitude to PwC for their generous contribution and sincere commitment in ensuring that education is accessible for all.

“Saksi po ang lahat sa makabuluhang araw na ito dahil sila po ang makikinabang sa inyong napakagandang proyekto na naging bahagi ang PUP. Maraming salamat po sa inyong tiwala sa Education on Wheels ng PUP at marami pong mga estudyante natin ang matutuwa at lalo silang maiinspire na mag-aral at maging kagaya ninyo na maging matagumpay sa kanilang propesyon.” Muhi said.

Roderick M. Danao, proud alumnus of PUP, in his speech, ensured that the donated buses are brand new and custom made to ensure its longevity and to serve its purpose on becoming the mobile classroom for the EOW program for the less fortunate Iskolar ng Bayan in Payatas and Tatalon in Quezon City and in Smokey Mountain, Manila, offering them a unique opportunity to break free from the cycle of poverty and chart a brighter future for themselves, their families, and to their communities.

“This mobile classroom is not just a bus, it is a beacon of hope for the children of Payatas, Tatalon, and Smokey Mountain who, otherwise, might not have access to quality and free education that only PUP, our Sintang Paaralan, can deliver,” he stated.

Representing the Acceleration Centers Leader Hari Kumar, Nilesh Sharma emphasized the importance of making it certain that every youth has access to quality and affordable education.

“I firmly believe that it is a duty of every individual in the world to nurture our children and youth as they are the architects of the future. By investing our resources in developing skills amongst students, especially those deprived of quality education. We are actively forging an equitable road ahead, ” he said.

“This initiative is about so much more than a piece of infrastructure, it represents hope, opportunity, and a powerful example of what we can achieve when we come together with a purpose and heart,” he added.

After official turnover of the bus, a ceremonial blessing of the vehicle was held, led by University Chaplain Rev. Fr. Stephen Mifsud to praise this great blessing and seek God’s protection as it fulfills its intention to help the Iskolar ng Bayan.

With this recent donation, PUP continues to further its commitment to extending its reach to support more impoverished Iskolar ng Bayan through EOW which currently houses 140 students, aiding them via the free and quality education that the University offers.

PUP@120: Gawad Parangal 2024 honors long-serving faculty, administrative staff, and retirees

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) held the Gawad Parangal 2024 on Wednesday, November 13, at the Bulwagang Balagtas, awarding 246 faculty members, administrative personnel, and retirees for their long and unwavering service and dedication to the University.

PUP President Dr. Manuel M. Muhi, in his opening remarks, conveyed a heartfelt message to the employees.

In his speech, he acknowledged everyone’s contributions in bringing the institution closer to its goal of becoming the ‘leading comprehensive polytechnic university in Asia’.

“Kayo [mga empleyado] ang mga tahimik na bayani nagsisiguro nang maayos na takbo ng ating institusyon sa araw-araw. Hindi magiging posible ang mga tagumpay ng ating unibersidad kung wala ang inyong kontribusyon at suporta,” Muhi stated.

“You [the employees] are the silent heroes who ensure the smooth operations of our institution every day. The achievements of our university would not be possible without your contributions and support.”

The awarding proper
Following the program’s opening, the ceremony began as employees received their respective awards, starting from those with 10 years in service until the retirees.

Dr. Carmencita L. Castolo, who had served for 44 years in numerous capacities both as an administrative official and professor, delivered a speech on behalf of the awardees to celebrate and honor their milestones.

She emphasized the significance of their collective contributions to the betterment of PUP and expressed her gratitude.

“Ang ating PUP kasi…[ay] isang tahanan ng mga pangarap. Dito sa ating mahal na pamantasan, pinalalakas natin ang loob ng mga kabataang Pilipino na ngayon ay may pag-asa na makamit ang kanilang kinabukasan,” she added.

“Our PUP is truly a home of dreams. Here at our beloved University, we empower young Filipinos, giving them hope to achieve their aspirations.”

Executive Vice President and concurrent Vice President of Planning and Finance Alberto C. Guillo gave the closing remarks to formally end the Gawad Parangal 2024.

Guillo gave inspiring anecdotes about people with links to PUP, emphasizing the university’s sense of community and how it exists beyond the institution.

“Ipagpatuloy pa natin ang ating pakikipag-isa, pakikisama, at ang ating maganda at malaking kontribusyon sa ating sintang paaralan upang maisulong pa natin [ang] kanyang mithiin at pagganap ng kanyang adbokasiya at misyon,” he encouraged.

“Let us continue our unity, camaraderie, and significant contributions to our beloved University to further advance its aspirations and fulfill its advocacy and mission.”

Gawad Parangal 2024 recognized the exemplary service of PUP’s employees, highlighting their utmost commitment and dedication to serving the University, the youth and the people.

Dangal ng Bayan, Kawaning PUPian: PUP hosts PESDI Awards

Faculty and administrative personnel from different colleges and campuses of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) gathered for the Professional Enhancement and Skills Development Incentive (PESDI) Awarding Ceremony on November 13, 2024, at Bulwagang Balagtas to acknowledge their unwavering dedication and service for the University.

With the theme “PUP@120: Dangal ng Bayan, Kawaning PUPian,” the PESDI Awards honor the colleges and campuses of the university for their exceptional performance and significant contributions to the PUP’s growth and development.

As part of our 120th Founding Anniversary, Atty. Gemy Lito L. Festin, Dean of PUP College of Law and Chairperson of the PUP Program on Awards and Incentives for Service Excellence (PRAISE) Committee, highlighted and honored the employees’ commitment to their jobs.

“Nawa’y magsilbing paalala ang okasyong ito na patuloy tayong maging huwaran ng integridad, kahusayan, at malasakit sa bawat gawain natin. Sama-sama nating ipagpatuloy ang misyon na magbigay ng kalidad na edukasyon at serbisyong may puso para sa bawat Pilipino,” he said.

“May this occasion serve as a reminder for us to continue being role models of integrity, excellence, and compassion in everything we do. Together, let us carry on the mission of providing quality education and heartfelt service to every Filipino.”

Following Festin’s remarks, PUP President Dr. Manuel M. Muhi expressed his gratitude to the awardees, saying, “Ito po ay dahil sa inyong lahat na naging bahagi sa pagbibigay ng buhay, paglalaan ng oras at serbisyo, at higit sa lahat, ang pagmamahal sa ating Sintang Paaralan. We are proud to have all of you as members of the working force of our Sintang Paaralan”.

“This is all because of each one of you who has been part of bringing life, dedicating time and service, and most importantly, showing love for our beloved University. We are proud to have all of you as members of the working force of our beloved University.”

Meanwhile, former Sandiganbayan Associate Justice Efren M. De La Cruz, in his keynote address, emphasized the essence of doing everything to the best of one’s abilities.

“To the awardees, as you receive your deserved awards today, it is hoped that you will not rest on your laurels but shall continue to pursue greater acts for the sake of our Bayang Pilipinas and our people. And that you will continue to display excellence and shine examples worthy of admiration and inspiration to others,” he said.

The 2024 PESDI Awards, as led by the PUP PRAISE Committee, are divided into distinct seven categories: (1) employees who had contributed to the achievement of academic excellence that gave prestige to the university; (2) employees who had contributed to the achievement of non-academic excellence that gave prestige to the university; and (3) employees who undertook a substantial level of additional work and responsibility and worked long hours without pay during periods that they are understaffed. Additionally, awards were also given to (4) employees who exerted efforts that contributed to increased assets and revenues of the University; (6) employees who had displayed an excellent level of customer service demonstrated by positive feedback from clients; and lastly, (7) employees who through their exceptional efforts gained accreditation or quality standard and international recognition for the university.

The said ceremony was graced by a total of 110 teaching and non-teaching personnel, reflecting its significance. They each received certificates and plaques as tokens of recognition and appreciation for their contributions.

As the event concluded, Executive Vice President Prof. Alberto Guillo then delivered his closing remarks.

“After performance and skill enhancements are realized and created increased productivity at work, performance recognition should, or shall I say, must follow. Great people feel valued and appreciated for their contributions,” he said.

The recent ceremony did not only celebrate the remarkable achievements of PUP’s dedicated personnel in the last 120 years but also reaffirmed the university’s commitment to excellence and service, inspiring all to continue striving for greater heights.

PUP renews partnership with GMA for Midterm Elections 2025

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) signed the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with GMA Network, Inc. for the upcoming midterm national and local election coverage, “Eleksyon 2025.” This collaboration aims to provide comprehensive, factual, and reliable election updates to Filipinos across the country.

Through this partnership, PUP students and faculty members will have the opportunity to actively participate in election-related activities, content creation, and research efforts. PUP’s involvement will also help amplify the voices of community, especially the underprivileged and underrepresented sector, through localized perspectives on election issues.

Representing PUP in the ceremonial signing, Professor Tomas O. Testor, Vice President for Student Affairs and Services (VPSAS) stated that the partnership “does not only enhance GMA’s commitment to a fair, balanced, and people-centered election reporting, it also reiterates PUP’s role in contributing to democratic nation-building.”

The partnership further includes webinars and engagement initiatives focused on election-related issues, designed to equip voters with the information they need to make an informed choice.

DEFLL visits Universitas Pamulang

Faculty members of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines College of Arts and Letters (CAL) Department of English, Foreign Languages, and Linguistics (DEFLL) visited Universitas Pamulang (UnPam) on October 27 - November 1, 2024, at Pamulang, South Tangerang City, Banten Province, Java, Indonesia.

DEFLL Chairperson Ma. Cecilia S. Angeles shared that the visit consists of various activities such as international community service, curriculum review, and academic lectures on various topics related to English language education and literary studies. She also noted the importance of this new association.

Angeles said, “The collaboration between the two universities aims to strengthen educational partnerships, share expertise, and foster a rich cultural exchange, connecting both institutions and their students to a global community.”

This venture began with an International Community Service at Jampang English Village, Jawa Barat on October 27 where professors from both PUP and UnPam provided lectures for gradeschool teachers on teaching English to young learners. Dr. Rolando P. Quiñones, Jr., alongside Dwi Rahayu discussed “Teaching Speaking for Young Learners Using CLT Approach” while Dr. Annabelle A. Gordonas, with Ni Komang Ariani, talked about the “English Language Teaching Training for Elementary and Middle School Teachers through Appreciation of Children’s Literature.”

On the next day, a courtesy call to UnPam leadership namely University Chairman Dr. Pranoto, Rector Dr. E. Nurzaman, the Vice Rectors and the Deans of the different faculties, with the Dean of the Faculty of Letters Tryana was held in the morning. In the afternoon of Day 2, a curriculum review of UnPam’s English Literature program was done by the DEFLL group headed by Chairperson Angeles and Dr. Marissa L. Mayrena.

CAL Dean Dr. Rafael Michael O. Paz took center stage on the third day when he lectured about the importance of English for international communication for faculty and students and highlighted the value of embracing diverse Englishes to bolster their proficiency in the language. In the afternoon, the PUP delegation toured the UnPam Campus and its landmarks, opening discussion on the possible international internship of PUP students.

On the fourth day of DEFLL’s visit, Dr. Quiñones and Dr. Gordonas returned, this time to discuss the significance of English in legal studies and the pros and cons of publishing in Science and Technology Index (SINTA) accredited journals to various UnPam faculties, particularly Letters, Law, Economics, Technology, Islamic Studies, Education, and Computer. The lecturers encouraged the audience to use the language to achieve their academic and professional goals in both research publication and legal communication.

The fifth and last day of the international visit features Jennline Christian B. Aguilar’s lecture on creative writing in English and Dr. Jinky D. Reyes’ discussion about the effective ways in developing research topics for language, linguistics, and literature. The entire juncture ended with an extension and community outreach program in the Curug Village led by UnPam-Faculty of Letters where Dr. Emeteria Leonila A. Perez and John Paolo Sarce conducted a discourse on empowering women through public speaking and enhancing early childhood education using children’s literature in the Southeast Asian context.

PUP ranks among top universities in Southeast Asia in QS World University Rankings 2025

PUP has once again ranked among the top universities in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings for Asia 2025.

PUP placed 7th among universities in the Philippines, 92nd in Southeast Asia, and within the 541st-560th range in all of Asia. This achievement highlights the university’s adherence to global standards in teaching, facilities, sustainability, research, and employability.

The university retained its three (3) QS Star Rating, with five (5) stars in Employability and Online Learning, four (4) stars in Teaching, Academic Development, and Inclusiveness, and 1 star in Global Engagement.

University President Dr. Manuel M. Muhi expressed gratitude to the QS organization and the PUP community, attributing this success to their collective efforts.

“For the second consecutive year, PUP is recognized among the top universities in Southeast Asia, thanks to the dedication of the entire PUP community,” he said.

Dr. Muhi added that PUP is committed to continually enhancing its educational quality.

“You can expect that we will continue to raise the bar, not only to meet international standards but also for the benefit of our ‘Iskolar ng Bayan.’ Our goal is to provide our students with the best possible education, empowering them to succeed both locally and globally,” he said.

CAF Student wins PCO Song Writing Contest

Ma. Kriziel Otiong, third-year BS Management Accounting student, won the PCO CommUnity Campus Caravan Song Writing Contest (Regional Level) on October 25. The competition is part of ongoing engagement activities undertaken by the Presidential Communications Office (PCO).

The theme for this year’s celebration is “CommUNITY: Nagkakaisang Tinig Tungo sa Bagong Pilipinas,” aimed at “magnifying and showcasing unity among government institutions by illustrating a whole-of-government approach in combating misinformation and disinformation while fostering a sense of unity among students and the youth,” according to the PCO.

Otiong outshined 300 representatives from various competing schools. She believes that such recognition would undoubtedly encourage other fellow students to explore and excel in similar pursuits that contribute to both personal growth and national pride.

PUP commemorated its 120th founding anniversary on October 19 with a grand convocation and fellowship event held at the PUP Gymnasium. President Manuel M. Muhi delivered an inspiring address, highlighting the university’s journey with the theme “Malayo pa, pero malayo na”.

His message emphasized the accomplishments of PUP over the years and the path forward as the university continues to strive for greater success and impact in Philippine education.

From Humble Beginnings to a National Leader
President Muhi began by reflecting on PUP’s origins, tracing the university’s roots back to its founding as the Manila Business School in 1904. Originally established to provide business education aligned with the needs of the workforce, PUP has evolved through the decades, adapting to meet the changing demands of Philippine society.

After becoming the Philippine College of Commerce in 1952 and finally transforming into the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in 1978, the university now stands as one of the country’s largest and most respected institutions for higher learning.
