Abalin, through her study titled “Iskotutorial: Development of an Educational Website Using Wordpress,” explored the creation and utilization of an educational platform using Wordpress. Her research was about the development of a website to enhance learning experiences for students.

Meanwhile, Kenneth Del Rosario’s study, “Improving English Vocabulary of First year BSED students through Quizlet,” focused on the integration of a digital learning tool—Quizlet in a classroom setup to enhance the vocabulary acquisition of freshmen students.

The last research, “Translanguaging in Action: Practice, Benefits, and Challenges,” by Reynaline De Guzman delved into the application, advantages, and problems associated with translanguaging, emphasizing its role in language teaching and learning.

ICALLE 2023 led the discussions on applied linguistics and language education, bringing together applied linguists, language educators across levels, and graduate and undergraduate students, who teach or are involved in the teaching of English or any other first or second language.

Intended as a triennial conference, ICALLE aims to sustain this exchange of ideas so that more research-based instructional practices could be explored and developed.

Two of the conference activities were Competitions and Awards for 3-Minute Thesis (3MT), Pitch, ICALLE OPAs (Outstanding Paper Award), and Round Table Discussion.

The Round Table Discussion were divided into two (2) categories 1) AI in English Language Teaching and Language Research which featured the current debate on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in ELT and Language Research where panelists shared the benefits, threats, issues, challenges, and how teachers and students and scholars should deal with them and 2) English Language Education in the Philippines: Current Situations and Future Directions where the chairpersons of different English departments in the NCR were invited to share the status of applied linguistics and language education in their own universities.

The three-day conference also invited speakers, panelists, mentees, and plenary speakers such as, Prof. Nicola Galloway from the University of Glasgow of United Kingdom, Prof. Jong-Bok Kim from Kyung Hee University of South Korea, Prof. Rochelle Lucas from De La Salle University of Philippines, Prof. Andrew Moody from the University of Macau of Macau SAR, and lastly, Prof Eric Friginal from Hong Kong Polytechnic University of Hong Kong SAR.

Following the success of past ICALLE conferences, ICALLE 2023 brings similar questions to the fore by facilitating a dynamic discussion of the application of research in the many branches of linguistics to language education. It strengthens the language educator the interface between skill in the method and practice of language teaching and information about theoretical and methodological developments and issues concerning how languages such as English are learned and taught.

The ICALLE served as a platform for these Iskolars to showcase their academic and technological skills, innovation, and potential contributions to the field of language and linguistics.

View this article in PUPWebSite Mon, 20 Nov 2023 13:39:00 GMT http://www.pup.edu.ph/news/?go=D1FLVOOwGDE%3d PUP SMB hailed as overall champion in 2023 University Intramurals Hezron Malubag, News, PUP Sta. Payong, News, PUP Campus Journalists

Three outstanding biology researcher-students of Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Rommel Aban, Abigail Indong, and Alethea Lopez presented their innovative study in Asian Mycology Congress 2023, clinching the best oral presenter award, in Busan South Korea on October 10–13, 2023.

The trio’s thesis, titled “Validation of Colletotrichum asianum Detection: A Comparative Study between PUP DETECT LAMP Assay Kit and Conventional PCR,” presented by Lopez, who won the best oral presenter, focused to validate the recently developed PUP DETECT LAMP Assay Kit (PDLAK) vs. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), both methods to detect Colletotrichum asianum (C. asianum) to the renowned Philippine carabao mangoes.

According to Lopez, C. asianum silently infects healthy mango plant tissues, remaining symptomless until the post-harvest stage when it causes unsightly black, rotten-like spots on mango skins.

“In the case of C. asianum, it infects healthy mango plant tissues as an endophyte, and the infection’s visible effects are typically most pronounced during the post-harvest stage.” Lopez mentioned.

To address this challenge, she emphasized the need to use science to find infected mangoes, whether they show signs or not, to avoid losses.

Lopez stated that PCR which is considered the “gold standard for molecular pathogen detection” is time consuming and demands complex and expensive equipment.

“This study involves a comparative analysis of both methods’ sensitivity and specificity and explores the potential for PDLAK to serve as a “new gold standard” for fungal pathogen detection of C. asianum in carabao mangoes.” Lopez told PUP Campus Journalists.

She explained that their thesis centered on comparing the two methods in terms of “sensitivity and specificity” which refers to “ability to detect the smallest amounts of fungal DNA,” and “capability to accurately detect the targeted fungal pathogen.”

Furthermore, the thesis revealed that PLDAK could be a promising cost-effective alternative for on-site and laboratory detection of the C. asianum in carabao mangoes.

“Our findings indicate that PDLAK (88%) surpasses PCR (25%) in terms of sensitivity, detecting fungal DNA levels as low as 1.165 x 10^-9 pg compared to PCR’s 2.329 pg.”

The research conducted by Lopez along with Aban and Indong hopes to pave the way for sustainable post-harvest treatment by providing a tool for rapid detection of pathogens, aiding in its control and management.

View this article in PUPWebSite Tue, 07 Nov 2023 09:04:00 GMT http://www.pup.edu.ph/news/?go=uASQLX40JGU%3d PUP OUS grabs silver in EdukCircle's 1st Vlogging Competition Frince Carl N.
