Mesa Campus. The event marked the first in a series dedicated to oral literature and cultural heritage, held in celebration of National Indigenous Peoples’ Month and PUP’s 121st Foundation Anniversary. Maáram Talks is described as a “TED Talks”-inspired platform for sharing “ideas worth spreading” on place-based education.

Representing Senator Loren Legarda, Vice President for Research, Extension, and Development, Ms. Anna Ruby P. Gapasin conveyed the senator’s message of support and encouragement, underscoring the significance of the Maáram Talks as a platform for empowering educators in the fields of arts, culture, and literature.

Dr. Maria Jovita Zarate, Project Manager of Maáram, explained that Maáram means “Maalam” or “knowledgeable,” emphasizing its goal of supporting educators.

“Ang Maáram Talks ay ipinanganak mula sa aming hangarin na makalikha ng mga nilalamang makabuluhan at nakatuon sa pangangailangan ng mga guro na nagtuturo sa iba’t ibang larangan ng sining, kultura, panitikan, at maging sa heritage studies,” she said. (“Maáram Talks was born out of their desire to create meaningful and relevant content that addresses the needs of teachers handling various disciplines in arts, culture, literature, and heritage studies”.)

A highlight of the afternoon was the screening of Sa Ilog Halawod, a 25-minute episode from the Dayaw documentary series. The film explored the epic Hinilawod of the Panay Bukidnon, recorded by anthropologist F. Landa Jocano during the 1950s, running at least 35 hours, and traced the journey of these historic tapes to their new archival home following the epic’s 2024 inscription in the UNESCO Memory of the World Asia-Pacific Register.

Three compelling talks anchored the program, each shedding light on the depth of Visayan oral traditions and their vital connections to contemporary education.

Liby Limoso, Lecturer at West Visayas State University, opened the series with his presentation titled “Exploring the Intricate Genealogies of the Hinilawod.” By tracing the descendants of epic chanters, he explored the intergenerational transmission of knowledge and wisdom, drawing a striking parallel between the endurance of oral traditions and the persistence of political dynasties in modern governance. His talk highlighted how cultural legacies continue to shape identity, authority, and social continuity in today’s communities.

Following this, Asst. Prof. Marilou Morales from the University of Eastern Philippines delivered her presentation, “From Screen to Tongues: Siday Meets the New Media.” She demonstrated how siday—Samar’s vibrant poetic tradition—can thrive in the age of technology through social media and digital storytelling. Morales introduced a student-centered learning plan that integrates poetry performance and multimedia engagement, ensuring that local literary expressions remain relevant and accessible to the younger generation.

Concluding the series, Dr. Maria Jovita Zarate presented “Myth and Magic, Mimesis and Modernity: Close Reading of the Hinilawod.” Her discussion delved into the representation of female characters in the Visayan epic, highlighting lessons on leadership, resilience, and governance. Zarate also shared an innovative lesson plan that connects these ancient narratives with interviews of contemporary women community leaders, encouraging students to draw meaningful insights between mythic wisdom and modern empowerment.

The event closed with an engaging open forum, where educators and cultural advocates discussed practical strategies for integrating place-based curricula into classrooms. The session was also livestreamed on Facebook, extending its reach beyond the physical venue.

The Maáram Talks series contributes directly to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It advances SDG 4 (Quality Education) by promoting inclusive, experiential, and culturally rooted pedagogy; supports SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through strengthened local partnerships and cultural heritage preservation; and aligns with SDG 15 (Life on Land) by cultivating ecological consciousness grounded in indigenous wisdom. Through such initiatives, PUP and UCCA reaffirm their commitment to education that honors the past while building a sustainable and culturally vibrant future. Mesa Campus and stands as the living witness to the University’s growth and transformation over the years.

Standing more than 20 meters and estimated to be more than 50 years old, PUP’s balete tree is the 46th Heritage Tree in Metro Manila.

Symbol of strength, will, and transformation

Dr. Armin S. Coronado, Director of the PUP Research Institute for Science and Technology (RIST), emphasized that the tree embodies the University’s resilience and evolution. Not just a landmark, he said, it is also a symbol of continuity, strength, and the enduring spirit of the Sintang Paaralan.

“For over five decades, the tree has quietly observed the rhythm of University life, from student activism to cultural events, the infrastructure development and academic milestones. So, it stands as a strong symbol of continuity and resilience, representing the collective dedication of past presidents up to the current president and reflecting the University’s enduring spirit rooted in commitment to public service and education,” he stated.

Representing DENR-NCR Regional Executive Director Atty. Michael Drake P. Matias, Production Forest and Management Section Chief, For. Arturo G. Calderon noted that while their Heritage Tree Program aims to identify, protect, and promote historically significant trees, it also hopes to deepen public understanding of the ecological and environmental significance of trees in fighting pollution and climate change.

“Umaasa kami na ang pagkilala ng puno na ito bilang Heritage Tree ay magpa-paalala sa komunidad ng PUP ng kanilang mayamang kasaysayan, magbibigay inspirasyon sa mas malalim na pagpapahalaga sa kalikasan, at magtutulak sa mas maraming programa sa konserbasyon at sustainability.” Calderon added.

(We hope that recognizing this tree as a Heritage Tree will remind the PUP community of their rich history, inspire a deeper appreciation for nature, and encourage more conservation and sustainability programs.)

Commitment to preservation
Organized by RIST in cooperation with the DENR-NCR and the PUP Cultural Heritage Committee, this milestone event was supported by alumni, faculty, student, and union representatives—all of whom pledged their commitment to preserve the legacy of the new Heritage Tree.

The Sintang Paaralan reaffirms its dedication to sustainability and the preservation of both environmental and cultural heritage as stated under the United Nationals Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely No. 4 in Quality Education, No. 11 for Sustainable Cities and Communities, No. 13 in Climate Action, and No. 17 in Partnerships for the Goals. Project FORTH established a pioneering master’s program designed to equip educators for service in the Philippines challenged and underserved communities.

With support from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Department of Education (DepEd), Project FORTH has evolved beyond its initial EU youth teaching project in Manila into a consortium co-developing a specialized curriculum emphasizing blended learning, transnational cooperation, and immersive experiences in both the Philippines and Europe. The current KA171 mobility is a direct outgrowth of this successful foundation.

Expanding Academic Mobility and Expertise Exchange
Through the new Erasmus+ phase, PUP and UNIBO offer expanded student and faculty mobility opportunities that foster cross-cultural understanding, collaborative research, and innovative pedagogical approaches integrating local and global perspectives.

This academic year’s international exchange features Jason J. Alvarez, LPT—a graduate student in the Master of Arts in Education major in Teaching in Challenged Areas (MAED-TCA) pursuing studies at UNIBO’s Giovanni Maria Bertin Department of Educational Sciences. His academic work centers on inclusive pedagogies and educational innovation, complemented by cultural immersion and research aligned with his master’s thesis.

Another key element of this exchange was the faculty mobility of Prof. Dr. Ma. Junithesmer D. Rosales, LPT. She is the former dean of the College of Education and a faculty member in both MAED-TCA and Master of Arts in English Language Teaching (MAELT) programs in PUP.

From October 15 to 28, 2025, Dr. Rosales served as a Visiting Professor at UNIBO’s Giovanni Maria Bertin Department of Educational Sciences, where she delivered specialized lectures on critical topics like multiculturalism, inclusion, and gender that are central to the Philippine educational context—facilitating a deeper, two-way intercultural learning experience for the UNIBO Master’s and PhD students.

Both student and faculty mobilities were selected through a competitive, merit-based process involving application review, academic evaluation, and panel interviews. The mobility program remains open to qualified graduate students at the College of Education’s MAED-TCA and MAELT programs.

Advancing Global Education Goals
Founded in 1088, UNIBO is widely recognized as the oldest university in the Western world and one of Europe’s leading academic institutions, ranking first in Italy in the Education field. Upholding its Latin motto, “Nourishing Mother of Studies,” UNIBO remains a pillar of scholarly excellence, innovation, and intercultural dialogue.

The PUP–UNIBO collaboration aligns powerfully with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly Quality Education (SDG 4), Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17). By connecting global academic experiences with locally responsive education, this partnership advances PUP’s vision of cultivating educators who are globally competent yet deeply rooted in their communities. Through the Erasmus+ program, the Sintang Paaralan reaffirms its leadership in fostering inclusive, transformative, and globally engaged higher education.

For more information on Erasmus+ and related international programs, contact the University’s Office of International Affairs.

View this article in PUPWebSite Wed, 05 Nov 2025 17:47:00 GMT http://www.pup.edu.ph/news/?go=Qn8iubWXpqU%3d The Comeback of Brilliance: PUP Rekindles Academic Spirit in UAC 2025 John Wyne M. Muhi, Executive Vice President Alberto C. Guillo delivered a heartfelt message drawn from the President’s letter, which underscored the university’s collective vision.

“This event perfectly reflects our shared aspiration of becoming a leading comprehensive polytechnic university in Asia. The establishment of our OUS Academic Building is a concrete step toward realizing that vision. Through true collaboration and perseverance, we can continue to build a stronger and more inclusive PUP for all,” EVP Guillo conveyed on behalf of President Muhi.

EVP Guillo lightened the moment by humorously referring to the building as a “kingdom,” yet he underscored its deeper meaning — a home and a second chance for learners who aspire to return to their studies despite life’s challenges. The OUS Academic Building stands as a testament to PUP’s unwavering commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), which promotes inclusive and equitable lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Moreover, this milestone reflects SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by opening doors to education for individuals who may have been left behind due to socio-economic and geographical barriers. It also supports SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), through the enhancement of PUP’s academic facilities designed to integrate digital learning and modern pedagogies and instructions.

The event gathered key university officials, including Assoc. Prof. Marianne C. Ortiz, Director of the OUS Institute of Open and Distance Education (IODE), who led the opening prayer; Dr. Emanuel C. De Guzman, Vice President for Academic Affairs, who delivered a message of support; and Fr. Stephen Mifsud, MSSP, University Chaplain, who officiated the blessing of the new building. Also in attendance was Dr. Rudolf Anthony A. Lacerna, Executive Director of the Open University System (OUS). Former Executive Director (2018–2023) and University Professor Dr. Carmencita L. Castolo likewise graced the ceremony. Dr. Castolo was instrumental in the early stages of the project, having sought funding assistance through Hon. Rowena Niña O. Taduran, Undersecretary of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), who once served as a course specialist of the OUS.

The blessing of the new OUS Academic Building symbolizes PUP’s dedication to expanding educational access through flexible, technology-driven, and inclusive learning systems—further advancing the university’s role in achieving the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and solidifying its mission as the National Polytechnic University serving the Filipino people.

View this article in PUPWebSite Mon, 27 Oct 2025 18:39:00 GMT http://www.pup.edu.ph/news/?go=3QzVAHvAOBU%3d DOTR brings discounted Beep cards to PUPians Jasmine Joson, News, College of Arts and Letters

In partnership with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and AF Payments Incorporated, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) launched the three-day Concessionary Card Caravan (CCCar) from October 15 to 17, 2025, at the Ninoy Aquino Library and Learning Resources Center.

The caravan aims to provide discounted Beep cards to students, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) within Sintang Paaralan, granting them an automatic 50% fare discount on railways such as the Light Rail Transit (LRT), Metro Rail Transit (MRT), and other partner merchants.

Derived from the Concessionary Card Issuance Project (CCIP), the CCCar streamlines the process of acquiring concessionary cards—making it more accessible and time-efficient for regular university commuters. Previously, applicants had to manually fill out forms at select railway stations, with processing still dependent on slot availability.

The caravan introduced a simplified system beginning with an online registration, where applicants provided their basic information and preferred schedule. Upon receiving confirmation, qualified applicants proceeded to the University Library on their chosen date to complete the following steps: present a valid ID, encode their details through the Concessionary Card Processor (CCP), have their photo taken, sign the acknowledgment form, and pay a one-time processing fee of ?30.

Through this initiative, PUP and its partners have significantly improved the commuting experience of students, senior citizens, and PWDs. The CCCar 2025 not only reduced processing time but also brought essential transport services closer to the University community, exemplifying the spirit of accessibility, convenience, and public service.

A frequent passenger of LRT Line 2 and a student at the PUP Open University System (PUP OUS), Karla Cacapit described the Concessionary Card Caravan as a convenient alternative to her usual commuting experience at the station.

“Availing the beep card is really convenient because I don’t have to line up every day for at least five minutes. Just yesterday, I was stopped by the ticket seller who asked about the validity of my ID—and this happened during rush hour, around 8 a.m. at Shaw Boulevard—so it caused quite a delay for me,” Cacapit shared.

Cacapit’s daily experience mirrors that of many within Sintang Paaralan. Through the implementation of CCCar 2025, students, faculty, and staff now enjoy a more efficient commuting experience that helps improve their productivity and well-being.

This initiative also reinforces the University’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), as PUP continues to recognize the transportation challenges faced by its constituents. By promoting accessible and affordable mobility, the University contributes to alleviating the daily financial burden of commuting while advancing inclusive, sustainable, and community-centered solutions for all.

View this article in PUPWebSite Fri, 17 Oct 2025 11:13:00 GMT http://www.pup.edu.ph/news/?go=BYrX40%2fIYUY%3d Bayanihan sa Kalusugan: PUP, UNILAB Join Forces for Free Annual Physical Exam for Employees Heildenberg Dimarucot, News, Communication Management Office

In a two-day medical mission that embodied the true spirit of Bayanihan, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), through its Medical Services Department, partnered with United Laboratories, Inc. (UNILAB) to provide free annual physical examinations to over 500 employees, administrators, staff, security personnel, and student-athletes.

The initiative, part of UNILAB’s 80th anniversary celebration and corporate social responsibility (CSR) program, marked the pharmaceutical company’s first collaboration with a state university for a large-scale holistic health mission. The event offered comprehensive healthcare services, including screening and assessment, laboratory testing, medical consultations, and medicine compliance guidance, ensuring that each participant received a complete and professional evaluation.

Participants saved an estimated ?5,000 worth of medical expenses through the free services, making the program not just a health initiative but a significant act of economic relief for PUP’s workforce. For many employees, the convenience of having such services within the campus meant they no longer needed to take time off work to access quality medical care.

“We are very happy that the University exerts its effort to provide comprehensive medical services for employees like us. We no longer need to file a leave just to get a medical laboratory — it’s already here, accessible and free,” shared one participant.

PUP’s Medical Services Department emphasized that the project reflects its commitment to the health and well-being of the university community, highlighting that accessible and preventive healthcare is vital to sustaining productivity and morale.

“In order to serve better, we must be in our optimum condition — free of any kind of disease. A sound mind must also have a well-nourished body. This must complement each other,” Dr. Liza Yanes, Head of the PUP Medical Services Department.

The collaboration between PUP and UNILAB also reinforces broader national goals under Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-being, promoting preventive healthcare and workplace wellness. With increasing health risks due to stress and sedentary work patterns, such partnerships between educational institutions and private organizations serve as vital models for inclusive and sustainable healthcare access in the country.

View this article in PUPWebSite Fri, 10 Oct 2025 15:12:00 GMT http://www.pup.edu.ph/news/?go=QX%2fsuTGOfaQ%3d
