The Polytechnic University of the Philippines College of Arts and Letters (PUP-CAL) proudly celebrates the achievements of three esteemed faculty members who have been awarded the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Competitive Grants 2025 under the National Committee on Language and Translation (NCLT). These grants recognize exceptional research and translation projects that contribute to the preservation, promotion, and development of language and culture in the Philippines.
Asst. Prof. Mary Joy Parajas, Managing Editor of the Research Publications Office (RPO), will explore the multicultural identities of Philippine Nikkeijin (Japanese descendants) in Davao City. Her research aims to illuminate the narratives of statelessness and identity formation within this community, offering valuable insights into their lived experiences.
Assoc. Prof. Jenalyn Lai, Chief of the Center for Translation Studies, will focus on assessing the Filipino Sign Language (FSL) proficiency of PUP faculty. Her project will lay the foundation for a primer designed to enhance FSL usage within academic settings, fostering greater inclusivity across the university.
Dr. Romeo P. Peña, Chief of the Center for Heritage Studies, will undertake a book translation project to make Motoe Teramu-Wada’s historical work on Japanese presence in the Philippines more accessible. By translating this work into Filipino, Dr. Peña’s research will bridge linguistic gaps and deepen local understanding of this important historical narrative.
This success is made possible in part by the crucial support provided by the Research Institute for Culture and Language (RICL), which offered indispensable guidance and technical assistance to the faculty in crafting and submitting their project proposals. The RICL’s contributions emphasize the ongoing collaboration between the academic and research sectors at PUP, helping to achieve significant milestones in cultural research and development.
The NCCA Competitive Grants Program is a prestigious initiative that provides financial support to projects that pass a rigorous three-stage evaluation. Proposals are selected based on their quality and alignment with the NCCA’s mandate and priorities, as determined by its 19 National Committees. These grants play a vital role in preserving and promoting Philippine culture and arts, reinforcing PUP’s commitment to advancing cultural research and innovation.
