The Institute for Continuing Professional Development (ICPD) and the Office of International Affairs (OIA) successfully welcomed 28 students from the National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism (NKUHT) in Taiwan on January 16. They comprise the second batch of participants for the ICPD English Enhancement Program.
The 2 week-long program is the brainchild from the collaborative effort between the ICPD and the OIA with the aim of enhancing the English language skills of the participants while immersing them in the rich culture and history of the Philippines.
During the first day, the attendees were warmly welcomed by the officials from the Office of University Services (OUS), including the OUS Executive Director, Dr. Carmencita L. Castolo, and the ICPD Director, Dr. Evangelina S. Seril.
On that same day, the NKUHT students first learned the topic of “The Philippines and Its Culture,” introducing the diverse and vibrant Filipino culture and exploring its traditions, customs, and values, setting the foundation for the future language lessons.
The second day centered on Philippine history and its traditions, embarking them on a journey to several nation-shaping historical events and immersing them to the various traditions and festivals celebrated all over the country.
In addition, a comprehensive grammar lesson was conducted to strengthen their understanding of the English language.
Filipino cuisine took center stage on the third day, as the students explored and engaged with the flavors and food culture of the Philippines, particularly the popular turon, deepening the understanding of the culinary traditions of the country while satisfying their taste buds.
On Day 4, the Taiwanese students learned the traditional dances of the country, alongside application and grammar review exercises, helping them to express themselves through movement, which enhanced their language skills and gave them a glimpse of the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines.
Effective communication, presentation skills, and another comprehensive grammar were the main lessons for the fifth day. The instructors taught the students further language skills, equipping them with the necessary tools to deliver engaging presentations, ensuring that their message resonated with their target audience.
Day 6 focused on sentence structure and grammar. The students engaged in interactive exercises and discussions, strengthening their grasp of English grammar rules, and setting the foundation to express themselves accurately and confidently.
The instructors of the program then dedicated the seventh day to resumé writing essentials and crafting a powerful self-introduction. Participants learned the art of showcasing their skills and experiences effectively, ensuring that their resumés stood out from the rest. Through role-play and practice, they also honed their self-presentation skills, preparing them for future endeavors, both personally and professionally.
For the next lesson, the students were prepared for in-person and virtual interviews, providing them with techniques and strategies to excel in both settings, gaining confidence in their ability to impress potential employers which are the necessary skills to successfully navigate the competitive job market.
The ninth and final day of the English Enhancement Program marked the most significant milestone for the students when they participated in mock interviews, receiving valuable feedback from language experts, allowing them to put their newfound skills into practice, further refining their interview techniques and preparing them to the professional life.
The program concluded with a graduation ceremony, where certificates were awarded to commemorate their successful completion of the English Enhancement Program.
To wrap up the program, the students toured the historical sites in the Philippines, visiting the Mabini Shrine in Tanauan, Batangas and paying homage to the great Filipino patriot. They also went to the picturesque Taal Lake and the Rizal Shrine in Calamba, Laguna, gaining insights into the life and legacy of the national hero, Jose Rizal.
The English Enhancement Program for the National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism has left a lasting impact for the Taiwanese students. They learned not only the intricacies of the English language but also gained a deeper appreciation for the rich culture and history of the Philippines. ICPD looks forward to the development of the NKUHT students into globally competitive professionals.
