Two teams from the College of Science (CS) secured top spots for the Philippines leg of the ASEAN Data Science Explorers (DSE) 2022 competition, sponsored by the ASEAN Foundation and SAP Asia Pte Ltd. Lourd John Joaquin and Juan Miguel Perido, Team Optimization from the Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics 3-1, and John Adrian Adona and Bea Jane Lozano, Team Facts and Stats from the Bachelor of Science in Statistics 4-1, qualified for the national finals. Prof. Kenneth James T. Nuguid serves as the adviser for both teams.
ASEAN DSE aims to raise awareness of ASEAN, and achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs). The event aims to equip the youth, from all 10 ASEAN member states, with data analytics and other relevant skills, and motivate young people to get involved in the region’s pressing socioeconomic issues through data-driven proposals that will help the IN-SDGs.
All teams are required to create data analytics proposals and storyboards using SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC). They will select one ASEAN-related problem from the six SDGs to be addressed by their data analytics storyboard.
The 10 qualified teams will compete during the national finals, which are scheduled for August 22 to September 2, 2022, in order to qualify for the regional finals, which will be held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The winning team will receive a trophy, USD 800, and an all-expense paid trip to attend the Regional Finals.
