Water is one of the essentials of life, hence, the ample supply of high-quality and pollution-free water must be ascertained. Safe water is needed not only by humans but by other living organisms as well. An analysis of the water sample from the PUP Lagoon was conducted to determine if it is a conducive habitat for the fish and plants that live in it. The study showed the water color to be apparent; pH content 8.0; grease hydrogen 370 mg/L; weight of settleable solids 0.0170 gms; total solids 0.0046 gms; total dissolved solids 0.0025 gms; bio-chemical oxygen demand 7 mg/L and chemical oxygen demand 31 mg/L.
The water from the lagoon is highly polluted with oil and grease hydrocarbons equivalent to 370.0 mg/L exceeding the water quality criterion of 2 mg/L. Oil and grease will interfere with photosynthesis and the respiration of the living organisms in the water. The other parameters of seattlelable solids, total solids, biochemical oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand obtained in the analysis were below the maximum limit for class “C” water.
A periodic water analysis of the lagoon should be done and other parameters should be considered in the analysis. The Polytechnic University of the Philippines administration should take action to reduce the oil and grease hydrocarbons to free it of its pollutants.
