PUP athletes proved their athletic abilities after winning in the CEBUANA LHUILLIER National Inter-Collegiate Softball Championship.
Gerone Riparip, Lorez Ark Dela Cruz, Rafael Ramos, Renzo Tinio, Jugene Diaz, Mike Leandro, Christian Chinel, John Norwen Lucas, Jonell Salazar, John Paul Gecolea, John Aaron Gecolea, Jeffrey Mendoza, Stevin Raytos, Erlito Lara, Dave Millanes, John Patrick Trillana, Johny Martin and Russel Disamparo won 1st runner-up in 25-and-Under Men's Fastpitch Softball Championship category held on February 11, 2017 at Banlician Softball Field Cabuyao City, Laguna. PUP defeated Rizal Technological University (2nd runner-up) while Philippine Air Force claimed the top spot.
Cebuana Lhuillier - ASAPHIL is a sports event and tournament for softball, tennis, and basketball, among others. It was started in 2002 with the desire to boost sports development and awareness in the country. Aside from PUP, 45 teams nationwide vied for the championship in the Open and Club category.
In the 18-and-Under Men's Fastpitch Softball Championship category held on May 6 to 12, 2017 at the Sto. Niño Softball Field, Marikina City, Lucas together with Riparip, Disamparo, Gecolea A., Mendoza, Raytos, Trillana, Millanes and Lara stepped up for PUP to claim a win. With a score of 6-7, over Rizal Technological University, PUP claimed the 2nd spot next to Cabuyao IX (champion). PUP also received 1st runner –up award in the Men's Club Division headed by Coach Luis C. Dela Cruz and Coach Juanito C. Dela Cruz.
Meanwhile, PUP Men’s Basketball Team was hailed 1st runner-up in the 1st Liga Imuseño 2017 Open- Invitational Basketball Tournament held on March- May 2017 at the Imus Coliseum, Cavite City headed by Coach Theodelfonso Pacampara. PUP crushed Philippine Merchant Marine School of Las Piñas (2nd runner-up) while Colegio de San Juan de Letran and Philippine Christian University team were hailed as the champions.
These triumphant students were congratulated by Executive Vice President Dr. Hermina Manimtim in a courtesy call.
