University President Manuel M. Muhi received the Golden Wheel Award for Supporting Education last Saturday, January 28, in the Annual Rotary Awards Ceremony. The event was organized by the Rotary Club of Cubao West, in collaboration with Imagine Rotary and the Quezon City Local Government.
President Muhi is recognized for Pamantasang Bayan — Education on Wheels — his flagship extension program which aims to deliver the brand of PUP quality education to the doorstep of every Filipino family. EOW prioritizes out-of-school youth (OSY) in depressed urban and rural communities and its ingenious approach to higher education has been recognized and featured in various national public affairs programs.
60 young and adult learners joined the EOW pilot run last August. Classes are divided between day and night to accommodate single parents and working students. The university collaborated with Sandiwaan Center for Learning, a non-government organization dedicated to providing basic and technical education to the poor, to identify the beneficiary community in the City of Manila. Century Peak Corporation donated the bus which serves as mobile classroom for EOW.
Aside from EOW, President Muhi also spearheaded the Salin-Kaalaman Program, another priority extension program of the PUP System which provides short courses, seminars, and trainings to nearby communities. Capacity programs include livelihood, education and training, leadership, and community management.
“I am grateful to receive this award on behalf of the University. Thank you, Rotary Club of Cubao West, for this honor, Rotary Club of Loyola Heights for the endorsement. This kind of recognition emphasizes our significant role as educators in our country. Together with the whole PUP community, I am more than motivated and committed to continuing the programs we have begun and encouraging everyone to join us these initiatives,” Dr. Muhi shared in a text message.
Rotary Club Cubao West is a charity organization under the larger Rotary global network. Its over 800 chapters across the country are involved in various forms of community service.
