PUP commemorated its 120th founding anniversary on October 19 with a grand convocation and fellowship event held at the PUP Gymnasium. President Manuel M. Muhi delivered an inspiring address, highlighting the university’s journey with the theme “Malayo pa, pero malayo na”.
His message emphasized the accomplishments of PUP over the years and the path forward as the university continues to strive for greater success and impact in Philippine education.
From Humble Beginnings to a National Leader President Muhi began by reflecting on PUP’s origins, tracing the university’s roots back to its founding as the Manila Business School in 1904. Originally established to provide business education aligned with the needs of the workforce, PUP has evolved through the decades, adapting to meet the changing demands of Philippine society.
After becoming the Philippine College of Commerce in 1952 and finally transforming into the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in 1978, the university now stands as one of the country’s largest and most respected institutions for higher learning.
Celebrating Academic Excellence and Social Impact As PUP celebrates 120 years, it takes pride in a legacy of academic excellence and social impact. President Muhi noted that PUP has consistently produced topnotchers and achievers in various fields, and recently earned recognition as one of the top seven universities in the Philippines in the 2024 QS World University Rankings for Asia. This achievement reflects PUP’s growing reputation as a global institution committed to fostering excellence and addressing the needs of society.
During the event, President Muhi also paid tribute to the past leaders of PUP whose vision and leadership laid the groundwork for the university’s success. These leaders, he emphasized, championed the values of accessible education, academic rigor, and service to the Filipino people. “Their vision continues to guide us today,” he said, “reminding us of the importance of building on their legacy as we chart our future.”
A Message from PUP Alumnus Jonathan Batangan Among the distinguished guests was Jonathan Batangan, Executive Director of the Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation, Inc., and former FVP and Group Head of Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Brokers. As a proud alumnus of PUP, Batangan shared heartfelt words about the university’s impact on his life and the lives of countless others.
“Today, we honor the 120 years of an institution that has not only opened the minds of countless individuals but also made a lasting, humanistic contribution to our nation—a hundred and twenty years of success, dedication, and profound love for country,” he stated.
Reflecting on his journey, Batangan expressed his pride and gratitude. “PUP has not only shaped my own journey but has profoundly touched countless lives, playing a vital role in the transformation of society. Truly, it stands as a bastion of hope and positive change.”
He continued, “PUP is more than a university; it is a movement—a catalyst for change both in our society and across the globe. At the forefront of critical issues, it provides a platform for action and debate, fostering leaders who make a meaningful impact in every corner of our nation.”
Batangan’s words resonated deeply with the audience, particularly when he spoke of the lasting influence of PUP alumni: “In every province and city of the Philippines, you will find a PUPian committed to planting the seeds of meaningful change. PUP consistently produces leaders and changemakers who possess not only technical knowledge but also a strong sense of social justice.”
PUP’s Vision 120 years and Beyond Highlighting the role of the entire PUP community, President Muhi called for unity and collective effort to achieve PUP’s ambitious goals. He urged students, faculty, staff, and alumni to come together in support of the university’s mission, especially as it seeks to gain full recognition as the National Polytechnic University of the Philippines.
“The journey ahead requires all of us,” he said. “Together, we will not only maintain our standing but will soar even higher.”
President Muhi shared PUP’s plans for the future, underlining key initiatives in the 2024 University Development Plan. These include:
Reflecting on the university’s 120-year history, President Muhi emphasized that, while much has been achieved, the journey is far from over. “We have come a long way, but there is still much more to accomplish,” he said. “With love for PUP and dedication to our mission, we will continue to bring distant dreams closer and make the impossible possible.”
