The Department of Humanities and Philosophy (DHP) has successfully implemented Phase 1 of its Extension Program entitled LET’s GIVE (Gender, Instructions, Values, Environment). The activities for the Phase 1 rollout focused on gender inclusivity and awareness. The activities ran for four consecutive Saturdays: November 25, December 2, 19, and 16, 2023.
Around 60 beneficiaries from Barangay 635 Manila participated in the extension activities all held in the Manila Room, PUP Hasmin Building. DHP faculty members and Philosophy students (spearheaded by the student philosophy organization Societas Philosophiae) worked together to facilitate the sessions. Each extension gathering was divided into four age groups: children (12 years old and below), teens (13-17 years old), young adults (18-24 years old), and adults (25 years old and above).
Assistant Professor Hazel Vitales opened the four-day program proper. Associate Professor Mary Jane Mendoza, the Chairperson of the DHP, welcomed the participants on all Saturdays with opening remarks, followed by an inspirational message from Barangay 635 Chairperson Danilo San Bueno. Before the session proper, select Philosophy students commenced with an icebreaker that actively engaged the participants, especially the kids and teens. The Extension Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Edna Bernabe delivered closing remarks for each day while Brgy. Chairperson San Bueno closed on the last day.
The Day 1 focused on the basics of gender awareness and inclusivity in the community. The instructors Fr. Balani Alvendia and Ma. Artes Cabiles facilitated the group for adults. Instructor Jeniel Dasig facilitated the kids group. Inst. Patrice Joy Tabon spearheaded the teens with the help of instructors Jerald Lerida and Gerald Cielo. The instructors Alex Henon and Andaman Alimanan facilitated the circle for young adults.
The second day focused on gender identity and expression for kids and teens while the young adults and adult group were given discussions on Anti-Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC). Dasig gave discussions on gender and identity to the kids while Tabon, with the help of Cielo, and Lerida, gave discussions on gender and community to the teens. For the older participants, Henon and Aliman collaborated in their talk about the importance of the Anti-VAWC campaign and how can it be upheld in their community.
For the third day, other members of the DHP faculty led the delivery of lectures and activities. Inst. Ryan Balayo facilitated the children on the topic of gender and community. Instructors Alyssa Agliday and Zybel Araneta collaborated on the same topic but on teens. Both ended their discussions with art activities. Meanwhile, Henon and Aliman spearheaded the topic of the Safe Spaces Act to the adult beneficiaries to which action-oriented outputs such as suggested barangay policies were drafted by the participants.
For the last Saturday, the theme of the sessions was about gender and artistic expression. Other members of the Department led the facilitation. Aira Lu and Jan Gabriel Boller co-facilitated the session for children while Tabon together with Lerida and Cielo facilitated the sessions with kids. Assistant Professor Leonardo Dela Cruz, with the help of Aliman and Henon, delivered the session with adults on how to make mural painting. To culminate the whole extension program, Assoc. Prof. Mendoza, Brgy. Chairperson San Bueno, and extension program leader Gary Musa handed the participants their respective certificates of attendance for the four sessions. The last day concluded with a gift-giving where participants from Brgy. 635 received various gifts given by the faculty members of DHP in celebration of the Christmas season.
All of the sessions ended with group or individual outputs done by participants based on what they learned from the lectures. Each faculty facilitator was helped by other faculty members and Philosophy students present on the day. Day 1 was emceed by Assist. Prof. Vitales while Day 2 up to the last day were hosted by select Philosophy students.
“The teachers and facilitating students were friendly and good. We want more activities like this. Thank you po PUP,” expressed Allen Gabriel who joined the teens’ group.
“I learned a lot from our activities. We have learned the importance of gender sensitivity and awareness and how can they be maximized in our Barangay,” said the Sangguniang Kabataan Chairperson Diomy Gayle Villaflores, one of the participants in the young adult group.
“We are always thankful to the Philosophy Department of PUP for making this successful event a reality. We have more years for our collaborative extension. We will always be grateful for this partnership,” Kapitan San Bueno shared in his culminating message for the four-day extension.
In 2024, DHP will continue to provide Barangay 635 with the same program name but will then concentrate on Instruction-based training and sessions on literacy skills, leadership, and crafts-making, among others.
