Held on November 21, 2016, PUP ILIR produced the second batch of its Basic Labor Orientation for Graduating Students (BLOGS). PUP NALLRC's Bulwagang Bonifacio housed the all-day event. An estimated number of 300 mid-year graduating students attended the two-part seminars conducted by PUP ILIR in partnership with the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA).
Focusing on its goal to educate the soon-to-be members of the working class, ILIR gathered up four professionals who shared their knowledge and time to the student body. The program ran smoothly as it was divided into two shifts. Morning shift was attended by the students from the Colleges of Accountancy and Finance; Communication; Architecture and Fine Arts; Political Science and Public Administration; Computer and Information Science; Human Kinetics. Meanwhile students from the Colleges of Business Administration; Education; Social Science and Development; Engineering; Tourism, Hospitality and Transportation Management; Arts and Letter; and Science attended the afternoon part of the program.
Atty. Fidel Esteban, Chief of the PUP Procurement Management Office discussed the labor standards and the rights of workers. Ms. Leny Madriaga, a Master of Arts in Industrial Relations candidate, who is also an Administrative Officer at the University of the Philippines Diliman, talked about the rights and privileges of civil servants in the Philippines. On the second part of the program, Defend Job Philippines' Mr. Nikki John Abilar discussed the right to association and self organization of workers. PUP's Atty. Paul Braga discussed the unfair labor practices in the country. Fora followed after each discussion wherein students were given the chance to ask their questions.
True to its core of educating the youth about societal issues particularly in the field of labor, PUP through ILIR plans to have these labor seminars yearly. This is the second batch of BLOGS, a university wide pre-graduation seminar which will happen biannually in PUP starting this school year. BLOGS was first successfully launched in April for the 2016 year-end graduating students.
