A group of students from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines Calauan Campus won first prize in the PUP Business Plan Pitch Proposals 2021.
With a theme of "Innovative Technologies Viable for Commercialization" this year, various groups from different branches and satellite campuses of PUP participated in the competition last April 23.
The competition called for business plans that are technologically innovative in nature and are commercially viable. The winning group consists six BS Entrepreneurship students from the PUP Calauan campus, with their business plan titled PUPCinta Pupinya Pineapple Core Achara. PUP Pulilan was awarded 1st runner-up with Suman Frunch, and PUP Taguig at 2nd runner-up with Rock and Guac: Creamy Avocado Sauce. The awarding ceremony was held on July 22, and the winners received monetary grant for the business plans they pitched in the competition.
According to Leonard Leslie Sanchez, the representative of the winning group, their business plan pitch was initially one of their classroom projects when they were in their 2nd year in the university. When their campus received a call about the competition, their adviser encouraged them to turn their former project into a feasibility study, and eventually submit it as their entry for the competition.
Pineapple is one of Calauan, Laguna's primary agricultural product, so much so that the town celebrates Pinya Festival annually since 1999. The group drew inspiration from this and created a product out of the core of pineapple.
"The goals of our business are to help our local farmers to increase their income and solve malnutrition problems by providing a healthy affordable option," said Leonard. "Dahil po graduating students na po kami, we are planning to hand over ‘yung aming business to PUP Calauan, [which in turn] will generate fund for the projects of our campus," he added.
The group' representative stated that they will use the money for the necessary paper works to process and register the business before handing it over to PUP Calauan.
