Diploma of Electrical Engineering Technology (DEET) students from the Institute of Technology (ITECH) have developed the first solar-generated charging station in the University. Dubbed “iSkOLAR” charging station, this project was launched on May 14, 2024, in ITECH Grounds at Pureza St., Manila.
The research team of Ferolin Joy Nohay, Javezel Obenza, Jennie Rose Oswa, Chelsey Reyes, and John Paul Teope aims to create a green technology charging station that is sustainable and removes carbon footprint coming from electricity generation—factors needed to protect the environment.
Funded by climate justice organization 350 Pilipinas and supported by the PUP Center for Environmental Studies (CES), iSkOLAR charging station uses renewable energy generated by solar-powered batteries to charge electrical devices such as cellphones and laptops for 45 minutes. After that, the system will undergo a cool down period of five (5) minutes to store more solar energy for future usage, creating a sustainable cycle of eco-friendly electric consumption.
“Our actions today determine what we have and what the world wants us to do. Ang lahat po ay ginagawa natin para maibalik siya [sa nature]. If you do good po sa Nature, magba-bounce back po ito sa atin,” Teope said when asked of the significance of the project.
(“Our actions today determine what we have and what the world wants us to do. We are doing everything we can to give back to her [nature]. If you do good at our nature, it will bounce back to us tremendously.”)
In addition, the team hoped that future PUPians will capitalize on their project in order to present newer ideas that will help in improving the iSkOLAR charging station such as better equipment and a longer charging span.
University President Manuel M. Muhi also attended the launching ceremony to test the stations himself, praising the student’s ingenuity and the project’s advocacy.
“Isang manifestation ito that PUP is adhering sa tinatawag natin na fossil-free university. I’m pretty sure that PUP is taking this lead, especially ngayon na tumataas ang presyo ng [fuel] at bumababa ang [supply] ng fuel ngayon. Kaya kailangan talaga we need to look for alternatives, katulad ng mga ganito [charging station]”, he said.

CES Chief Jimmy Fernando noted that this project is a sign of the University’s support in following the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals, particularly the 7th Goal that focuses on affordable and clean energy.
“Ito ay palatandaan na ang commitment ng PUP sa green innovation ay naka-align at naka-direksyon sa Sustainable Development. Talagang ito ang konkretong halimbawa natin”, Fernando stated.
(This is the reminder that PUP’s commitment to green innovation is aligned and directed towards Sustainable Development. This is truly the most concrete example.)
ITECH Dean Ramir Cruz, meanwhile, declared that this project is the proof of PUP and its student’s unwavering dedication in acquiring great knowledge to help their fellow Filipinos.
“Patunay lamang ito na isinasabuhay natin ang Himno ng PUP na itong ating mga ginagawa ay mula sa PUP at ito ay ibabalik natin para sa bayan.”
(This is the proof that we practiced the preaches of the PUP Hymn that everything that we (PUP) are doing are our means to give back to our country).
