For its 15th Founding Anniversary, the College of Law held a lecture series dubbed as “College of Law@15: A Lecture Series”. The lecture series is in line with the College of Law’s commitment for this year which is to reach out the whole PUP community by way of sharing knowledge on timely issues.
On July 30, 2016, the invited speakers were Mr. Mari Kaimo, 700 Club/CBN news Anchor, and Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes P.A. Sereno.
The program started with opening remarks from the Dean of the College of Law, Atty. Gemy Lito L. Festin. Atty. Festin mentioned in his opening remarks some of the achievements of the College of Law for the last 15 years which are noteworthy to celebrate such as the consistent good performance in the bar examinations; establishment of the Office of the Legal Aid which is active in giving extension services to the nearby communities of PUP; formation of research group which produces bar materials for the bar candidates; lecture series in the college wherein notable lawyers were invited to discuss topics which are relevant to the study of law, among others. He also stated the objective of the lecture series.
Executive Vice-President Herminia E. Manimtim welcomed the guest speakers to the activity and congratulated the college.
Mr. Mari Kaimo congratulated the college for its achievements. He then lectured on the current national and international events.
Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes P.A. Sereno was not able to attend the activity but she sent Court of Appeals Justice Apolinario Bruselas, Jr. as her representative.
Before his lecture, Justice Bruselas congratulated the college for its 15th Founding Anniversary. He mentioned that although the PUP law school is very young compared to other law school, it is performing well in the bar examinations. He also stated that he was very happy because after so many years, he was able to come back to the university. Justice Bruselas also stated that he was personally asked by the Chief Justice to represent her in the activity.
Justice Bruselas then discussed the court pillars and the different programs that the judiciary is currently implementing.
After the lecture of Justice Bruselas, an open forum was held wherein students from the College of Law and other colleges were able to pose questions to the guest speakers, Mr. Mari Kaimo and Court of Appeals Justice Apolinario Bruselas, Jr.
After the open forum, Plaque and Certificate of Appreciation were given to the guest speakers.
Atty. Rosalie Dela Cruz-Cada then summed-up the lectures for the day and thanked those who attended the activity.
The activity was attended by five hundred ninety-four (594) students, faculty members and employees.
On August 4, 2016, Israel Ambassador to the Philippines, His Excellency Effie Ben Matityau was invited to give a lecture on the topic titled “Israel: The Only Democratic Country in the Middle East and its Economic and Political Relations with the Philippines.
In his lecture, he gave a short history of Israel and its nearby countries. He also discussed the economic and socio-political situations of his country. He also stated that the special relations between Israel and the Philippines may be traced back to the time of the then President Manuel L. Quezon wherein our country accepted Jewish refugees on the onset of World War II. He also said that many of them, Jews, have finished their studies in the Philippines.
He then mentioned that they now have a program wherein they communicate and coordinate with different institutions in the Philippines to propagate how thankful they are to the Philippines.
The lecture was attended by eight hundred twenty (820) students, faculty members and employees.
The last lecture of the series was held on August 24, 2016 with former Senator Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel, Jr. as the guest speaker. The topic of the lecture was “Federalism and its Socio-Economic Impact”.
President Emanuel C. De Guzman then delivered his message. He said that the topic is very timely as it has been the subject of discussions in other venues.
Former Senator Pimentel lectured on the details of his proposed federal system of government. He discussed political subdivisions, structure of government, and the distribution of wealth in his proposal.
After the lecture of Senator Pimentel, law students gave their reaction to the lecture. An open forum was also held wherein university officials, students and faculty members posed questions to the guest speaker.
Other executive officials of the university namely Executive Vice-President Herminia E. Manimtim, Vice-President Manuel M. Muhi, Vice-President Joseph Mercado, Vice-President Alberto C. Guillo and Vice-President Marissa Legaspi were present in the activity.
The activity was attended by seven hundred twelve (712) students, faculty members and employees.
