The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) will hold the First Annual Mardis Gras for Peace and Human Rights in celebration of the International Human Rights Day Day on December 10.
The almost two-week celebration of the university led by the Institute for Social Sciences and Development (ISSD) and the University Center for Human Rights, Research and Extension (UCHURRE) will begin from December 3 to December 14.
One of the highlights of the celebration is the holding of the PUP Mardis Gras and Carnival for Peace and Human Rights and will be an annual activity of the university celebrating the Human Rights Week. It will be a festive celebration of oneness and unity in promoting the accomplishments of human rights movements across the year.
The university will also hold the 1st Annual Christmas Carnival Bazaar from December 3 to December 14 with 50 stores offering Christmas gift items, and food and art services.
A Photo Exhibit of veteran photo-journalist Jes Aznar featuring powerful and dramatic shots of the families of human rights abuse victims in the country will be staged from December 10 to December 14. Aznar will also conduct a workshop on photography as an essential element for promoting and protecting human rights on December 11
After Aznar’s photography workshop, a documentary film/slideshow preview of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) will be shown for free regarding its overall campaign against media killings with emphasis on the campaign toward the pursuit of justice for Ampatuan Massacre victims.
Meanwhile, the Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP) and KINO Arts will lead the premiere of “ISHMA” on December 12, a documentary on the life and art of legendary director Ishmael Bernal directed by Sari Dalena and Keith Sicat.
The premiere will be preceded by the Ishmael Bernal Film Fest on the same day which will showcase Ishma’s unforgettable films like the Nunal sa Tubig, Manila by Night (City After Dark) and Working Girls.
On the other hand, Sining ng Naglilingkod sa Bayan (SINAGBAYAN), a progressive cultural organization will hold the showing of “Pitong Sundang: Mga Sayaw sa Lupa at Pakikibaka” on December 7 and 8 at 7 o’clock in the evening.
A Peace Flags Parade and Contest will have its initial launch on December 14 and will also be an annual event for the university. Colleges and student organizations of the university will compete in the flag creation reflective of the call for global peace.
Culminating activity for the Human Rights Week celebration is a concert featuring live band performances singing for peace on December 14. The concert is entitled “Rakrakan sa Karapatan: Rock Concert for Peace”.
