In its unwavering commitment to fostering a disaster-ready Sinta, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) and its employees, faculty members, staff, and students, in partnership with the Bureau of Fire Protection-Sta. Mesa (BFP) successfully conducted the Fire Drill Safety Seminar and Training on November 27, 2025, at the University’s South Wing Building and Oval.
Primed with the theme, “PUP: Ligtas, Handa, at Alerto sa Bawat Sunog” the fire safety drill was simultaneously implemented in the University’s Sta. Mesa campus and its satellite campus in Maragondon, Cavite—equipping the community with the necessary preparedness in the event of fire emergencies.
In his introductory speech, Vice President for Administration Adam V. Ramilo emphasized that strengthening disaster preparedness within the public is pivotal in times of crisis. Referencing the recent catastrophic blaze that devastated Hong Kong a day prior to the drill, Ramilo also underscored the importance of reinforcing proactive disaster measures to reduce the likelihood of the University facing similar devastations.
The training commenced with a brief lecture on workplace fire safety, familiarizing attendees with appropriate response procedures during fire-related emergencies. Following the seminar, participants’ foundational knowledge was reinforced through a hands-on demonstration on proper fire extinguishing techniques, conducted at the University Oval.
Concluding the event, Erickson D. Calata, Director of the University’s Disaster Resilience Institute (DRI), highlighted the significance of being disaster-ready, whether in the face of strong earthquakes or large-scale fires and encouraged the entire PUP community to continuously build a culture of preparedness. “We likewise urge all offices to conduct quarterly updates of their simplified contingency plans and emergency evacuation plans,” Calata stated.
This collaboration aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). By equipping the Sintang Paaralan with essential knowledge and practical skills to respond to fire emergencies, the drill promotes the safety, health, and resilience of students, faculty, and staff. Through these efforts, PUP reinforces its commitment to cultivating a disaster-resilient Sinta.
