The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), through The Mercantile Insurance Co., Inc., has purchased an Accident Policy Schedule to provide every PUP student an immediate safety net against accidents and other unforeseen incidents. This annual initiative has been implemented since the pandemic.
The insurance policy, effective since December 3, 2025, and valid until December 3, 2026, carries a total sum insured of ?7,395 billion. It extends coverage to all 92,667 PUP students for the following benefits: Accidental Death or Permanent Disability; Unprovoked Murder and Assault (excluding Cotabato Province, Sulu Archipelago, Basilan, Maguindanao, and Lanao del Sur); Accident Medical Reimbursement; Accident Burial Benefits; Daily Hospital Cash Benefit; Bereavement Benefit; Ambulance Service; Emergency Cash Assistance for fire and earthquakes; and Anesthesiologist/Surgeon Fees.
The said insurance also provides free coverage for members of the PUP Board of Trustees, regular teaching, and non-teaching staff aged 65 and below.
The University underscores that this measure is a basic accident-focused policy designed to offer essential financial protection in case of accidents, with modest medical and hospitalization support. It is not a substitute for comprehensive health insurance and does not cover routine illnesses or pre-existing conditions.
