The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) and the Rojuan Bernardino-Ramirez Foundation Inc. signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on March 11, 2025, at Silid-Lakan Dayang, University Library and Learning Resources Center, launching a scholarship program for deserving underprivileged students.
Key university officials attended the event led by Vice President for Student Affairs and Services Prof. Tomas O. Testor, Office of Scholarship and Financial Assistance Director Engr. Ana Liza R. Publico, and College of Communication Dean Dr. Jose Reuben Q. Alagaran. Representing the foundation were its President and CEO, Dr. Rojohn Bernardino-Ramirez, and Executive Assistant Ms. Marya Sonia Borreo Gamara.
Aligned with PUP’s mission and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 1 (poverty eradication), the foundation will initially support ten scholars through three programs:
Eligibility criteria include Filipino citizenship, third- or fourth-year PUP enrollment, a general weighted average of 1.25, and a family income below P120,000 per year.
Dr. Ramirez, inspired by his journey from poverty, aims to give back and hopes scholars will one day help others.
“I’m returning the favor to these young scholars of PUP, hoping to create ripples of generosity,” he shared, recalling how he sold ice candy to support his family and was aided by a public school teacher. His vision extends to reaching students in isolated regions, which he calls the “treasure of the Philippines.”
Director Publico stated that this initiative is part of PUP’s efforts to assist students through financial assistance programs aligned with the University Development Plan, emphasizing holistic student development and preparing students for future challenges.
Prof. Testor expressed gratitude for the partnership, emphasizing the need for more benefactors.
“This partnership provides another chance for students to finish school and prepare for their careers,” he stated.
Engr. Publico highlighted PUP’s commitment to student development, while Dr. Alagaran praised Dr. Ramirez’s unique approach to philanthropy.
This partnership assists students facing financial challenges and difficulties in supporting their education. The eligibility requirements ensure that qualified students receive financial assistance while maintaining outstanding academic performance until they complete their degree program.
