The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) held its virtual midyear commencement exercises for academic year 2021-2022 on April 21, conferring academic degrees to a total of 817 graduates. The event featured keynote speeches from two distinguished speakers: Usec. Dr. Gloria Jumamil-Mercado, and DBM Secretary Dr. Amenah Pangandaman.
In her speech, Dr. Mercado emphasized the importance of setting priorities and living a meaningful life, highlighting the relevance of the desiderata, a poem that emphasizes the value of being kind, honest, and virtuous in all aspects of life.
“At anuman ang iyong mga gawain at mithiin, sa maingay na kalituhan ng buhay, panatilihin mong panatag ang iyong kalooban. Sa kabila ng panlilinlang, kawalang-buhay at mga gumuguhong pangarap, maganda pa rin ang mundo” she said, reading from the tagalog-translated version of a famous peace by Max Ehrmann, Desiderata.
Dr. Pangandaman, on the other hand, shared her insights on budget management and the vital role it plays in delivering public services to the Filipino people. She underscored the need for accountability, transparency, and efficiency in managing public funds to ensure that resources are allocated appropriately and effectively.
The virtual ceremony, which was streamed live on the university’s website and social media platforms, was attended by the graduates’ families and friends, PUP faculty and staff, and other members of the academic community.
The PUP administration congratulated the graduates and expressed their confidence that they would make a significant impact in their respective fields and contribute to nation-building.
