640 students from the College of Science graduated last October 14—the first among colleges in the main campus to hold its face-to-face commencement exercises. The graduation was held in the newly built sports facility of the university and was attended by both faculty members and parents. This is the first time the university was able to conduct physical graduation rites, two years since the coronavirus pandemic struck.
Shiela Villamin-Galing, an alumna of batch 1991 from the Bachelor of Science in Food Technology (BSFT), served as the guest speaker. Upon recounting her colorful experiences as a former Iska, she encouraged all graduates to keep pursuing their dreams, not only for themselves, but for the benefit of the nation.
“Dumaan ka man sa hamon ng buhay, ’wag mong isuko ang pangarap mo, dahil ang tagumpay ay darating kung hindi ka mawawalan ng pag-asa,” she said.
Villamin-Galing has more than 30 years of experience as a Food Technologist, 25 years of which is in the research and development field. She was the innovator for the Peri Peri Charcoal Chicken, the first ever - Baked Fried Chicken in the Philippines.
Graduates also expressed their gratitude for having experienced the physical graduation rites especially that the past two years have been tremendously difficult for the graduating batch.
“Fulifilling kasi sobrang hirap ng online class given na first batch pa kami ng K-12. Hindi magiging fulfilling kung hindi kami ga-graduate face-to-face,” said Romina Baldorado a graduate from Bachelor of Science (BS) in Statistics.
Other colleges are expected to hold face-to-face graduation rites in the University, in the coming months given relaxed restrictions for public gatherings and increased public clamor to allow graduation ceremonies to be held physically. Branches and satellite campuses will also be organizing their own commencement exercises. Graduates were already conferred their degrees in a virtual ceremony last September 16.
