Last March 11-13, 2022, the International Global Network held a virtual conference for Asia Youth International Model United Nations (AYIMUN), which is a platform where “youth mentality in leadership, negotiation, and diplomacy is developed in a Model United Nations” format.
Jennylyn M. Balaoro, President of the PUP Quezon City Branch Student Council and a fourth-year BTLED student, was one of the Philippines’ official delegates at the abovementioned event. She portrayed a UNICEF official for Thailand and received an ‘Honorable Mention’ award for her outstanding performance in her UNICEF role.
“It was nice to exchange ideas and learn valuable perspectives from different people across the globe. I can also say that my experience was remarkable because aside from it being my first time joining AYIMUN, I was really surprised to be chosen as one of the delegates of the Philippines. With that, I’m grateful because the PUP Quezon City administration supported me in this endeavor and helped me secure a seat at the conference,” Balaoro shared in an email interview.
She pursued systems advocacy throughout the proceedings, placing herself in the shoes of the country and people she represents. Balaoro said that the whole virtual conference was a valuable learning experience for her, expanding her knowledge on parliamentary procedure as well as her oratory, negotiation, and diplomacy skills.
Balaoro encouraged fellow PUPians to explore these types of learning opportunities: “AYIMUN paved the way to expand my network and knowledge of global issues toward world peace and security. As a student and a leader at the same time, I encourage other students to engage in this kind of activity to broaden their knowledge, unleash their potential and improve their skills because we cannot learn everything in school nor learn solely from our teachers. We must seek opportunities that will make us realize that the world or the society that we have is the biggest classroom where we can best learn from.”
Asia Youth International MUN is a regular youth-led and youth-centric activity which aims to engage youth leaders from all over the world by organizing a platform to share perspectives and opinions in solving contemporary world issues.
