The Pasig River is recognized as a vital waterway in Manila, and its significance is acknowledged by many. Among those are PUP and Ilog Pasiglahin, who recently stepped up to provide rehabilitation projects and environmental activities. Both parties signed a memorandum of agreement on April 14 to initiate environmental activities and rehabilitation projects for the Pasig River.
Ilog Pasiglahin, a coalition of urban planners, students, churches, architects, and environmental advocates, in partnership with the university’s National Service Training Program (NSTP), will organize dialogues, seminars, art exhibits, and clean-up drives tailored to the conditions and needs of stakeholders in the adjacent areas of the Pasig River.
“With this MOU, we would like to formalize our partnership with PUP as a river champion, but we would also like to explore other ways that we can collaborate, especially considering extreme climate conditions,” said Joven Jacolbia, a PUP alumnus and a co-founder of Ilog Pasiglahin.
“Importantly, we’d like to instill awareness and develop the love and care of young people towards the Pasig River. Sana mahalin nila ang Pasig River,” he added.
According to Jacolbia, Ilog Pasiglahin was founded during the hype of the issue of PAREX when San Miguel Corp. (SMC) decided to construct the P81.53-billion Pasig River Expressway (PAREx) but later abandoned the project due to concerns raised by civil society about its potential harmful impact on the environment.
PUP, on the other hand, pledged to provide expertise, coordination, materials, and equipment to support the projects.
The signing was graced by President Manuel Muhi, Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) Emanuel C. De Guzman, National Service Training and Program (NTSP) director, Dir. Jovelina Jacolbia.
