The Research Institute for Science and Technology (RIST) showcased undergraduate research from different PUP colleges, branches, and campuses during the annual undergraduate research competition last August 26, 2022, via Zoom.
Ten (10) shortlisted contenders presented their completed research to an expert panel for evaluation of novelty and impact. The presenters were also evaluated based on their knowledge of their research topics, as well as their oral and visual presentations.
With their research titled “SB21: Portable Watermelon Ripeness Detector Acoustics Analysis and Spectral Identification,” a group of PUP Sto. Tomas students studying BS Electronics Engineering bested other student outputs in the competition.
Other competition winners include PUP Alfonso for their paper titled “Hydrogen Fuel Extraction from Seawater as an Alternative Source of Energy for Cooking Using a Solar-driven Electrolysis System” and the College of Engineering, PUP Main Campus for “ZICA Tubular Photobioreactor: Modified Zarrouk and IoT-based Spirulina Platensis Cultivation.”
Dr. Neil P. Balba from the Lyceum of the Philippines University – Laguna served as the chairman of the panel of judges. He was joined by Ms. Khristine L. Sandoval from the National University–Laguna, Engr. Ranil M. Montaril from Advanced Energy Incorporated, Dr. Matthew S. Bramble from the Children’s National Hospital, Washington DC, USA, and Dr. Francis F. Balahadia from the Laguna State Polytechnic University.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Armin S. Coronado, the director of RIST, stressed the importance of discussing student research output with professionals in the field. He also mentioned that students play an important role in enriching the university’s research environment.
