Comm. Adamat of CHED urges PUP graduates to become peace ambassadors
“I challenge you to go out into the world as peace ambassadors of PUP – talented, hard working, skilled young men and women. Sa kabila ng sipag at talino, kayo ang mga PUP peace ambassadors na may puso,” Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Commissioner and Tanglaw ng Bayan Award recipient, Honorable Ronald Adamat challenged PUP graduates during the first cluster of commencement exercises last May 8, 2019 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC).
Speaking to a crowd of Business Administration, Education, and Human Kinetics graduates during the 2019 Year-End Commencement Exercises of the University, Comm. Adamat urged the young people to champion peace and development in their future workplaces and institutions of higher learning. He strongly believes that peace is integral to ensuring a better society for the present and future generations of Filipinos; and quality education such as one promoted in PUP, would also be significant in guaranteeing lasting and sustainable peace.
Adamat is a proud Teduray, one of the many ethnic tribes in Mindanao. His lifelong advocacy for peace and development, education, and social reforms led him to engagements in the Peace Panel Talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), Undersecretary of the Tourism Department in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), Commissioner of the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP), and the Charter Change Advocacy Commission. He also served as an IP sector representative during the 10th Congress, legislating into law the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act of 1997, and the Organic Act of the ARMM. ###
Lina pledges P1 for every Air21 package for PUP
Air21 owner and former Customs Commissioner Alberto David Lina pledged P1 for every package delivered by his logistics company in the next two decades to help propel quality education in the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP). Lina admired PUP’s resilience and commitment to produce the best scholars of the country, hence his program dubbed “Piso Para sa PUP, Sagot Ko Padala Mo.”
The CEO and Chair of the Lina Group of Companies was commencement speaker during the second cluster of the May 8 year-end graduation rites at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC). He was conferred Doctor in Business Administration – honoris causa, in recognition of his countless contribution to the fields of business and accounting, as well as his remarkable public service.
“I am happy to contribute to the University’s goal of honing the next set of scholars and nation-builders,” Lina concluded his speech and congratulated PUP for its significant role in shaping the success of numerous companies and institutions. ###
Ricky Lee dares PUP grads to leave a mark: “'Yang hawak mong diploma, para 'yan sa iba, hindi 'yan para sa'yo.”
Multi-awarded writer Ricardo “Ricky” Lee dared young PUP graduates to use their diplomas for something bigger than themselves, “Ikatlo at huling maipapayo ko, makisangkot ka... Huwag kang kuripot. Ibigay mo ang buhay mo sa iba, maski na paminsan-minsan lang... Magkaroon ka ng boses, mag-iwan ka ng marka. 'Yang hawak mong diploma, para 'yan sa iba, hindi 'yan para sa'yo.”
Lee graced the third cluster of the 2019 Year-End commencement exercises of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Pasay City as commencement speaker. He was conferred a Doctorate in Humanities – honoris causa by the University, a long-time dream for the accomplished screenwriter.
“Akala ko hindi na ako gagraduate. Ilang dekada ko rin itong hinintay. Kaya mahalagang mahalaga sa akin ang karangalang ito na ibinibigay sa akin ng PUP. Walang katapusan ang aking pasasalamat,” Lee shared in his speech peppered with stories of resilience as a working student, and his continuing quest to help others reach their dreams of becoming writers, moving the crowd to tears. During the awarding ceremony, Lee was joined by his son, Kiko, and his best friends in the entertainment industry. ###
Environment USec receives Tanglaw ng Bayan; advocates support for environmentally-friendly public officials
Environment and Natural Resources Undersecretary and proud alum of the PUP Open University, Benny Antiporda received the Tanglaw ng Bayan Award from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines during the fourth cluster of the 2019 Year-End Commencement Exercises at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Pasay City.
Antiporda, a long-time President of the National Press Club, talked about heavy competition once the students come out of the university, and the key to survival is having the heart to face the unknown. His speech also covered his profuse gratefulness to the University for giving him a prestigious award, and the current accomplishments of the DENR under his leadership. He ended his address with the call to vote wisely : “Bumoto para sa bayan, hindi para sa bayad.” ###
Richest Pinoy Manny Villar motivates PUPians : “You have nothing to lose”
Former Senator and Vista Land CEO Manuel “Manny” Villar, Jr. talked about his humble beginnings, the importance of fighting amid losing everything, and the increasing need for young Filipino entrepreneurs in his graduation speech during the fifth cluster of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines’ 2019 Year-End Commencement Exercises at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Pasay City on May 9.
“Kung wala kayong puhunan, kayo ang perfect entrepreneur. Walang mawawala sa inyo. You have nothing to lose,” Villar says in jest to the Entrepreneurship and Finance graduates from PUP. While injecting humor into his speech, the Tanglaw ng Bayan awardee seriously noted the value of never losing heart amid life hurdles thrown to fresh graduates. He shared his life story in the hopes of inspiring the students to pursue businesses in the near future, becoming proud of their Filipino heritage, and turning weaknesses into strengths as graduates compete with stronger opponents in the professional world.
Meanwhile, Marian Princess Sacriz, BS Accountancy, magna cum laude, received the Manny Villar Excellence Award during the graduation ceremony. ###
Megawide CEO inspires PUP grads to be resourceful, independent
Speaking to a large crowd of Engineering, Architecture, and Interior Design graduates, Megawide owner Engineer Edgar B. Saavedra promoted the value of resourcefulness, independence, and the dogged pursuit for innovation during his commencement address at the sixth cluster of the PUP Year-End Commencement Exercises held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) on May 9.
He was conferred a Doctorate in Business Administration – honoris causa for his contributions in innovative Filipino engineering and his relentless entrepreneurial energy.
“Sometimes, being inexperienced can be good. It forced us to come up with new and innovative ideas that set us apart from the rest,” the young CEO quipped as he talked about the company’s rise and recent success in clinching large infrastructure projects such as the Mactan-Cebu International Airport expansion, and the new Paranaque Integrated Transport Terminal. ###
Justice Dela Cruz emphasizes integrity and transparency in his grad speech
Sandiganbayan Associate Justice and PUP alum Honorable Efren N. Dela Cruz shared words of wisdom and the value of integrity and transparency in his inspiring commencement speech to PUPians during the University’s Year-End Commencement Exercises held on May 10 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Pasay City.
Justice Dela Cruz was conferred an honorary doctorate degree in Public Administration . He strongly urged the young students to enter public service. He also reminded them to always be humane, honest, and trustworthy employees as these would not only give them peace of mind, but would also ensure their brighter future. Finally, he highlighted that PUP students are products of the Filipinos’ collective efforts to finance public education through taxes; hence, the need to give back and pay forward through good actions to fellow citizens.
He currently sits as the chair of the Sandiganbayan First Division, and remains a committed legal educator to several universities such as PUP, the Philippine Judicial Academy, San Sebastian College – Recoletos in Manila and Cebu City, the Arellano Law Foundation Review Center, and the University of the East Law Center.
Accountancy grad tops Class of 2019
Eugene S. Manaban, Bachelor of Science in Accountancy, batch valedictorian, led the 17,410 graduates of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) in its 2019 Year-End Commencement Exercises held last May 8 – 10 at the Plenary Hall of the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Pasay City.
“Tayo ang magiging sagisag ng PUP, ang Pylon na simbolo ng bawat iskolar ng Bayan,” Manaban encouraged his fellow graduates during his valedictory speech. The magna cum laude proudly shared how the University shaped and transformed his worldview, as the plight of the poor and the vulnerable living within the vicinity of its Mabini campus opened his eyes to the value of using his education in creating a better society.
A known achiever having led the College of Accountancy and Finance to numerous victories in inter-university management and advisory stints, Manaban credits his success to the warm support of the Almighty, his parents and family, friends, professors. He garnered a general weighted average of 1.20575.
17K Iskolars ng Bayan graduate from PUP; largest commencement exercise in history
17,410 graduates from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines marched during the 2019 Year-End Commencement Exercises. This is the largest commencement rites officiated by the University, doubling the number of graduates from the past three years. From 2016 to 2018, the country’s first and largest polytechnic university produced an average of 8,000 graduates. This historic three-day, nine-cluster rites was held last May 8-10, at the Plenary Hall of the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Pasay City.
May 8 cluster consist of the students from the Colleges of Business Administration (CBA), Education (CoEd), Human Kinetics (CHK), Communication (COC), and Arts and Letters (CAL). For May 9, graduates come from the Colleges of Political Science and Public Administration (CPSPA); Accountancy and Finance (CAF); Tourism, Hospitality, and Transportation Management (CTHTM); Engineering (CoE), Architecture and Fine Arts (CAFA), and the Institute of Technology (ITech). On the last day, students from the Colleges of Law (CoL), Computer and Information Sciences (CCIS), Social Sciences and Development (CSSD), and Sciences (CS), as well as those from the PUP Graduate School and Open University System, received their diplomas.
Speakers for the three-day ceremony include Sandiganbayan Associate Justice and PUP alum Honorable Efren N. Dela Cruz; multi-awarded writer Ricky Lee; and, Commission on Audit Chairperson, Honorable Michael G. Aguinaldo. Other speakers include business magnates Alberto Lina of the Lina Group of Companies, Manny Villar of Vista Land, and Engineer Edgar B. Saavedra of Megawide; Environment Undersecretary Benny Antiporda, Higher Education Commissioner Ronald Adamat, and Senator Tito Sotto. ###
