A research made by students and faculty from the PUP College of Engineering won in the recently held Annual IIEE Convention last November 24-27, 2010 at the SMX Convention Center. The entry Urine Energy Converting Attachment won 1st place in the contest in the national convention sponsored by the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines. Entries from all over the Philippines were shortlisted and the finalists were Tarlac State University, La Salle University Ozamis City, Polytechnic University of the Philippines and Technological University of the Philippines Quezon City and Manila.
The research design is a proposal for new urinal system and focuses on enhancing urinal's functions as public toilet for male, which includes new features such as the installation of lighting on each unit independently from the public electric line, promoting economical power consumption. The function can be possible by installing an energy attachment with panels to be attached to urinal pipes that funnels the urine to produce energy. The project doesn't only answer the scarcity of energy but also deals with environmental issues and promoting safer urinals at night.
The student proponents are Mr. Junar Joy G. Aguilar, Ms. Mary Joyce G. Donado, Mr. Ferdinand E. Embate, Mr. Lester B. Bio and Ms. Lian Marie O. Cabnadilla. Their faculty adviser is Engr. Faustino Rural.
The PUP College of Engineering is one of the constituent colleges of the University and one of the premier engineering schools in the Philippines.
