The College of Human Kinetics (CHK) has modest beginnings. In fact, as late as 1952, the Office of Physical Education Department (OPE) which was housed together with the Medical and Dental Clinic and the Department of Military and Tactics at Lepanto (now S.H. Loyola) opened for students enrolled in the mandated Physical Education, with the late Redentor P. Bautista as Head of the said office.
In the period of 1954-56, OPE became the Department of Physical Education with Redentor P. Bautista as director and six faculty members hired: Aida Mangabat, Elena Sta. Ana, Aida Torralba, Licerio Caluag, Felisa Ama and Esperanza Abraham.
In 1973, the DPE moved to A. Mabini Campus in Sta. Mesa occupying a building near the track oval where it shared again with ROTC.
It was in 1975, when the DPE transferred to the PUP Gymnasium, its present domicile and this time; all PE classes were held eventually at the gymnasium.
Cognizant that Physical Education and Sports had become the pride of the institution, the Board of Regents (BOR) eventually approved in 1977 the organization of the Institute of PE and Sports (IPES) with Prof. Redentor P. Bautista as the first IPES Director.
School Year 1978-79 saw the initial offerings of the ladderized baccalaureate program in PE called the Bachelor in Physical Education (BPE) which in line with the country’s objective to promote sports and physical fitness among the citizenry and in pursuit of the institution’s goal to provide a total approach training center for PE teachers, sports enthusiasts, coaches and recreation leaders.
Likewise offered in that same school year was the Master in Physical Education (MPE) in the PUP Graduate School and the Certificate of Physical Education (CPE), a course designed for teachers in the field who do not have enough background in Physical Education.
1987 brought prestige to the PUP community when Dr. Nemesio E. Prudente, then university president strongly supported the elevation of IPES to the status of a college. Thus, the IPES became the College of Physical Education and Sports, the very first college of its kind in the entire archipelago with Dr. Aida G. Torralba as dean replacing Director Redentor P. Bautista, who died at this time.
Prof. Licerio Caluag was designated acting chairman of the AD-HOC COMMITTEE in 1988 with Prof. Aida A. Mangabat and Irma Redaniel as members upon the retirement of former Dean Torralba in the College.
June 1990 to 1994 saw various leaders being appointed in the college with Prof. Aida A. Mangabat designated as Acting Dean and later Dean of the CPES and Concurrent -Chairperson, Department of Professional Program until her retirement. In 1994, Reynato G. Unso was appointed Chairperson, Department of Sports and Irma Redaniel as Chairperson Department of Service PE. In time, she eventually took over the reign of Prof. Mangabat and become Officer-in-charge.in 1994.
Department Chairpersons of both Departments in Sports and Professional Prgogram likewise took changes with Reynato G. Unso turning over his duties to Prof. Licerio Caluag, then later on to Prof. Angelito Sta. Ana. Appointed Chairperson of the Department of the Professional Program was Prof. Remus Laglagaron who turned over his department to Prof. Esperanza Abraham.
Prof. Esperanza P. Abraham was later appointed the 4th Dean of the College and Concurrent Chairperson, Department of Professional Program, Prof. Angelito Sta. Ana retained his position.
On June 20, 1995, Prof. Rene L. Latorre replaced Prof. Irma M. Redaniel as Chairperson in the Department of Service Physical Education. Also appointed during this time was Prof. Maripres P. Pascua as Chairperson, Department of Professional Program.
VPAA Dr. Samuel M. Salvador took over the reigns of CPES and became concurrent upon the retirement of Dean Esperanza P. Abraham in December 01, 1997. It was during this period that the meaning of accreditation was brought to the hilt.
In February 18, 1998 Prof. Maripres P. Pascua was appointed the 5th Dean of CPES and Dr. Carolina Panganiban took over to the reigns in the Department of Professional Program as Chairperson. Likewise, Prof. Ceferino Lanipa replaced Prof. Angelito Sta. Ana in the Department of Sports. Prof. Celia M. Rilles was later appointed Chairperson for the Department of Service PE (DSPE) vice Rene Latorre. Then, on November 26, 1999, Prof. Angelita O. Vibar replaced Dr. Carolina A. Panganiban as Chairperson of the Professional Program. Likewise, Chairpersons for the Department of Sports and Service PE are open for new leaders to help accomplish the college, vision and objectives.
The College of Physical Education and Sports is gearing toward the attainment of the vision and mission of its fore bearers and present leaders who persist in their views of a tomorrow in physical education. Accreditation of the College is given priority with the initial appointment of Prof. Milagros Mendoza as Coordinator last June 01, 1995 subsequently Prof. Celia M. Rilles’ appointment last July 23, 1997 prior to her appointment as Chair of DSPE. Prof.Luz Arroyo later replaced Prof. Celia M. Rilles as College Coordinator in Accreditation. Prof. Irma Redaniel took her position as Accreditation Coordinator replacing Prof. Arroyo.
This test of excellence is a welcome undertaking to the CPES community as this academic exercise brought the faculty, students and the employees a chance to showcase the college. This situation of sports and recreation in the college has improved tremendously and continuous to do so. Numerous athletes of regional and national calibre levels are from the college. Chances are the coach or an athlete of any event in the Philippine Team from the University. Participation in different sporting events is encouraged through SCUAA, NCRAA and other athletic invitational and recreational meets plus the recreation set-ups. Majority of the faculty members are active officers and/or members of various national sport association.
Quality graduates of the BPE program became the pride of the college as they continue to produce excellent results in the field of physical education and sports in and out of the country. Various batches of the BPE course became most sought after by different schools in both public and private sectors.
And as always, the College of Physical Education and Sports will continue to commit itself to become a global leader in sports, physical education, dance and recreation under the stewardship of the new president Dr. Ofelia M. Carague.
As the College of Physical Education and Sports journey to the pathways towards academic excellence by creating curricular activities in the different discipline of Physical Education and active participation of athletes in various national and regional competitions, Dr. Carolina A. Panganiban was appointed as the 6th Dean of the College, Prof. Virginia B. De Jesus as Chair, Department of Sports, Prof. Milagros Mendoza as Chair in the Professional Program.
2006 was a remarkable year for the College of Physical Education and Sports, the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACUP) granted the College as level one in Accreditation under a new Dean Prof. Reynato G. Unso, it was also under his leadership and with the help of his Chairperson in Sports, Prof. Eufracio Dela Cruz that the College still dominates in several events in SCUAA, PISCUAA and other invitational competition.
More accomplishments were evident in the College of Physical Education and Sports, a more comprehensive PE subjects were offered in the Department of Service PE under Prof. Lualhati A. Dela Cruz, as the new Chair of that Department, major subjects were likewise review under Chair Angelita Vibar as the Chair in the Department of Professional Program, by creating programs that enhance the lives of our athletes and students. These are designed to build healthier and knowledgeable graduates to succeed to take their places among the elite of the country.
CPES always has been to be the path for the nation’s future educators in Sports and Physical Education in producing skilled coaches and educators who through their own efforts and achievements on the Stage of Athleticism to impart their knowledge and dedication to their undergraduate.
2009 was a very significant year, the College was renamed as the College of Human Kinetics under the leadership of PUP President Dante G. Guevara with his vision to become a Total University and the guiding hand and full support of Dr. Samuel M. Salvador, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Prof. Celia M. Rilles was appointed as the 8th Dean that same year.
Prof. Remus M. Laglagaron was appointed to be the 9th Dean of the College of Human Kinetics on July 2012 under the new leadership of Dr. Emanuel C. De Guzman as President of the University.
