Researchers Irah Faye B. Garzon, Raven Elyze E. Laurella, and Ghimel P. Espinosa, with mentor Dr. Lourdes V. Alvarez, from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines – Sta. Mesa Campus bagged the prestigious research grant under the 2020 Young Innovators Program (YIP) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD). Their winning proposal titled “A Fungal chitosan-based Microbeads: A Heavy Metal Soil-Based Biobsorbent,” alongside eight (8) other researches, will receive up to P800,000.00 to develop their research studies and innovations.
In a virtual ceremony, DOST-PCIEERD announced the chosen recipients and inked grant contracts with the students and their mentors. Research teams will receive a grant covering the laboratory expenses, testing consumables, and honorarium for the teachers and students.
In their website release, DOST-PCIEERD Executive Director Dr. Enrico C. Paringit is glad that young researchers are taking the challenge to conduct research and innovation amid the pandemic. He said: “We express admiration for the young researchers on their determination to take on challenges to conduct research and development projects that offer solutions. They will serve as our brights spots for the future of science and technology in our country. They will serve as an inspiration for younger generations to follow. These YIPs also are the source of pride for their respective institutions.”
YIP was established in 2017 and is now on its fourth year of providing grants to students with researches aligned with its concerned sectors. It has since supported 20 teams of high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. For this year, 95 teams submitted their research proposals.
