The event featured Prof. Kuruvilla John, Department Chairperson of Mechanical Engineering at the University of North Texas (UNT), who delivered a specialized presentation titled “Multi-decadal Changes in Environmental Conditions Over Urban Areas of North Texas: An Energy and Environmental Sustainability Perspective.” The presentation provided students and faculty with insights into atmospheric engineering and pollution tracking.
Prof. John presented a multi-decadal source apportionment study examining how vehicle exhaust, industrial activities, and shale gas development contribute to the formation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and ground-level ozone. He also discussed pressing regional environmental challenges, including microplastic contamination in freshwater systems, the movement of toxic PFAS compounds, and the substantial water consumption required to cool expanding AI data centers.
Following the presentation, the partnership was formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between PUP and UNT. The MOU establishes a framework for joint research initiatives, faculty exchanges, and international academic pathways, further strengthening the University’s global academic collaborations.
Moving forward, the University aims to build on the partnership by pursuing formal Memoranda of Agreement (MOA) to support international student and faculty mobility, deeper research collaborations, and joint projects. Through this expanding partnership, the University looks forward to welcoming more visiting lecturers and engaging in global academic initiatives beyond the lecture hall.
For the PUP academic community, the event provided an opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world environmental challenges while supporting key global priorities. Through the discussion, students gained insights into how statistical modeling and atmospheric chemistry are applied in addressing public health and environmental management challenges.
The initiative supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action), highlighting the University’s commitment to advancing sustainable development through academic collaboration, research, and innovation
