The College of Human Kinetics (CHK), led by Dean Assoc. Prof. Lualhati A. Dela Cruz, launched their extension project titled “PARA Swimming Program” for Parent Advocates for Visually Impaired Children (PAVIC) at the PUP Swimming Pool, August 12.
“It was an honor to witness this historic event in which CHK officials, faculty members, administrators, and selected BSESS and BPED students came together and remained committed to a common goal: to ensure a community needs-based project or program that can make a difference in the lives of beneficiaries with the help of a roster of experts,” stated President Manuel Muhi, during the first day, reinforcing his shared vision of sustainable development for community or partner beneficiaries.
PARA Swimming Program is a four-day session designed to help visually impaired children easily adapt to water and understand and feel how the body reacts to it with each body position and movement. This extension project provided a venue for the promotion and maintenance of more adaptive and inclusive sports.
Asst. Prof. Ronald Alejo Guiriba, head coach of the PUP Men’s Swimming Team, World Aquatics International referee, and Para Swimming International Technical Official, and Mr. Janvier Mantala, former PUP Varsity Swimming Team member and BSESS Program aquatics course specialist served as expert instructors.
Asst. Prof. Guiriba emphasized familiarization with the water environment as a source of confidence that will help their first phase progress. Mr. Mantala assisted the participants with their parents or guardians during the session, and they were asked to perform a series of drills to develop their feel for water. This included sculling and breathing techniques below and above the surface of the water. Buoyancy drills were also introduced to help them float, which will be useful for proper body positioning and movements.
They will reconvene on August 19, 26, and September 2 to complete the first phase of their extension program.
