The Intellectual Property Management Office (IPMO) launched the 2nd Annual Prototyping Exhibit Award & Recognition (APEAR) 2024 last July 30 held at the Engineering Science Research Center (ESRC) Building. The event was anchored to the theme: “Empowering Student Innovation: From Research to Refined Products.”
This affair aims to offer opportunities and encourage participants. The activity was comprised of students from different campuses of the PUP System to demonstrate their physical prototypes and innovative concepts. The participants can compete for prizes that will support the next stages of their innovation and concept demonstration. It highlights both outstanding individual and/or team performances that align with the overall objectives of the activity.
Thirteen (13) teams were selected to present their prototypes to the panel of experts. They came from various PUP campuses such as Mabini, Alfonso, Maragondon, Sto. Tomas, and Sta. Rosa.
The APEAR panel consisted of noted industry professionals such as Engr. Adam Jamora of CBRE GWS IFM Phils Corp, Engr. Genesis Olarve of Commonwealth Foods Inc., and Engr. Benedictus Marvin Moldes of SM Engineering, Design, and Development Corp. who provided insights and comments on the presented prototypes of the Iskolar ng Bayan.
At APEAR’s conclusion, the best prototypes who exhibited “potential for industry application” were announced. Team Black Pepper Threshing Machine (John Vince J. Aquino, Sophia Loren R. Borja, Lalaine B. Bravante, Jerico N. Gatdula, Kyle Cyrus R. Gliponio, and Jelerrick A. Parenas) from PUP Alfonso Campus was crowned the champion and won the Php 40,000 cash prize, followed by the 2nd Place Team Briquetting Machine (Hazel Anne A. Bencito, Emmanuel A. Flores, Ivan J. Gatchalian, Ron Jester V. Martinez, Nhel Rodney B. Papa, Cristian Jay C. Ronario, and Rosslan Jay A. Varias) from PUP Alfonso Campus who collected Php 30,000.
The 3rd Place Team Organico (Kiary Marleth D. Arce, John Lorvin P. Castuera, John Kenneth F. Denso, Jovie Mae S. Gamboa, Khim C. Linantud, and Jimwelle V. Sisante) from PUP Maragondon Campus got Php 20,000, while Team Spectranut (Jhea Camille M. Alegre, Rhose Anne P. Martinez, Monica Rose N. Ramos, Hannah Micah A. Sadian, and Oswald Godwin G. Villanueva) from PUP Sto. Tomas Campus and Team Automated Feeding Watering for Fowls (Karylle C. Alcedo, Alexis Jean C. Burgos, Nikka P. Cailing, James Marvin C. Gatdula, Ron Jacob D. Mojica, and Katrina S. Rollo) from PUP Alfonso Campus who were named 4th and 5th Places, respectively, gained Php 10,000 each.
IPMO Director Dr. Ginno L. Andres believes that this occasion facilitated an avenue for creativity and ingenuity amongst its students, thereby creating an avenue to display their inventions and its potential while promoting camaraderie and teamwork.
“PUP is committed to embedding the culture of research and innovation amongst its stakeholders. With this kind of activity, this is their platform to showcase their prototype or product,” he said.
Andres then thanked the Vice President for Research, Extension, and Development Anna Ruby P. Gapasin, Vice President for Campuses Pascualito B. Gatan, and the local government units of Alfonso, Cavite, Maragondon, Cavite, Sto. Tomas, Batangas, and Sta. Rosa, Laguna, crediting the success of this activity to their unwavering support.
The IPMO Director noted that most of the prototypes were community-centered aiming to address the issues within the participant’s area, stating “these technologies are inspired by the needs of the community, that’s why they designed, and they fabricated the technology to answer the issues in the community.”
Andres hoped for sustainability for the future iterations of APEAR to be able to facilitate more researchers and ideas and to provide additional funding to entice students to become research-oriented, tech savvy, and inventive.
