PUP Hygears wins 2nd place in the Shell Eco-marathon 2021 Off-Track Awards

Team Hygears from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) finished second in the Shell Eco-marathon 2021's Virtual Off-Track Awards.

The PUP Manila student team was declared the Communication Awards Runner-up to the winning team DTU SUPERMILEAGE of Delhi Technological University – India at the Shell Eco-marathon Asia Pacific and Middle East Awards on April 16, 2021.

PUP Hygears was one of the top-ranked teams in the Asia Pacific and Middle East Off-Tracks, which attracted a record of 198 entries from 64 teams from 11 countries. The Communications Award was one of the most common categories, with over 100 submissions.

The Philippines' entry was described by the Virtual Off-track awards as “especially intriguing because it engages the entire team in sharing personal experiences, with a strong emphasis on the ‘human' aspect, as well as their ‘personal' trademark.”

PUP Hygears won $750 in prize money as a runner-up winner, as well as Virtual League points, putting it in 22nd place in the Asia Pacific and Middle East Region with 175 points, ahead of the #23 University of the Philippines Diliman Team Alamat UP Team CERO, which was named Global Champion of the Tracking and Reducing CO2 Challenge in December 2020.

De La Salle University's Eco Car Team, on the other hand, is ranked #70.

PUP Hygears took to social media to express their delight at the honor. "The team is hopeful in making us remember not only in creating energy-efficient vehicles but also gives importance to social movements. To join this award is great progress, we, who can motivate others to engage in this competition, involved in making the future. Being able to participate in this season is considered to be a leap for us, embodying our trademark, #TheAdventureContinues.”
