The PUP BroadCircle held its first live face-to-face event since the height of the pandemic with “trutHtellER: Women of Media,” last March 24 at the PUP Claro M. Recto Hall. The event, which was part of the Women’s Month celebration, featured a short talk and an interactive forum with Bulatlat’s two fearless journalists, Menchani Tilendo and Alyssa Clarin.
Tilendo discussed how women in the media are discriminated against and threatened during elections in Mindanao. “We owe our story to people who for the longest time have been unheard,” Tilendo enthused. “Hindi tayo ang magbibigay ng boses sa kanila, may boses sila,” she added.
Clarin, a COC alumna, explained the importance of alternative media in bringing grassroots news to the public, and explains why journalists remain in journalism despite it being one of the most hazardous jobs in the world. “Sinong magre-report sa media kapag [inaatake] sila? Wala namang media [na] magre-report ng atake sa kanila ’di ba? So ’yon yung istorya, ’yon yung kagandahan ng alternative media. Sila yung mayroong record sa mga atake sa mga media na hindi nire-report ng kahit sarili nilang media outfit,” Clarin expounded.
Clarin also shared the importance of being on ground zero, “Lumabas ka, maglakad ka, pumunta ka [roon] kung saan nangyayari yung action. Be there and experience, kase ibang-iba yung experience na nando’n ka. Pinapakinggan mo, nakikita mo, naririnig mo sila kaysa yung nakikita mo lang sila through video or livestream.”
After the short discussion, participants had the opportunity to ask questions to the speakers in the interactive forum. As participant Niel Christian Samar of BA Broadcasting 1-1N addressed the adversities women face in patriarchal societies, he asserted that women are truly strong and powerful. “Let’s continue to empower ourselves to promote women empowerment and continue to hold the line of truth, accountability, and transparency,” Samar said.
Cheska Mia Rosal, the event’s executive producer, and Assistant Professor George Vincent Gamayo, the adviser of PUP BroadCircle delivered the closing remarks. They expressed their gratitude to the attendees, the working committee, and everyone who contributed to the success of the event.
PUP BroadCircle is the premier academic organization of the Department of Broadcast Communication at the PUP Main Campus. The student organization lives up to its commitment to stand for advocacy which truly represents the marginalized sector, by not only revealing the truth that women experience in the media, but also by revealing the power that comes from collective actions to speak and defend the truth.
