The month-long celebration of National Arts Month at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) reached its creative finale as the College of Arts and Letters (CAL) held its closing program at the PUP Oval Grandstand on Wednesday, February 28.
With the theme “Sining-Galing, Tanghalang Bayan ay Abutin,” the concluding program featured different talents and creative performances from students and faculty members, who also campaigned for different advocacies about current societal issues.
PUP President Manuel M. Muhi graced the opening remarks by telling the audience that the celebration is important for every individual to display their abilities and capabilities in many artistic ways, not just for themselves but also for others, showing true unity despite every struggle and hurdle.
“Ako ay nagagalak na maging bahagi ng ating closing program para sa CAL National Arts Month. Isang pagkakataon ito upang magtipon-tipon, magpalitan ng karanasan, at ipagdiwang ang ating pagiging malikhain bilang [isang] nagkakaisang komunidad. Nawa’y ipagpatuloy natin ang pagtutulungan at pagkakaisa sa pagtataguyod ng sining at pagbabayanihan sa ating pamantasan, at sa ating bansa,” Muhi said.
(“I am glad to be a part of this closing program for the CAL National Arts Month. This is an opportunity to get together, share experiences, and celebrate our artistry as a community. Let us all continue to promote the beauty of arts that symbolize unity to help each other in our university and our country.”)
The Chair of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Victorino Manalo then took over the stage with an inspirational message about celebrating every February as National Arts Month for the past 30 years.
He also said that art should not just be a decoration, but also a part of one’s identity and the creative soul of the country.
PUP 24th Student Regent Kim Modelo, Sandigan ng Mag-aaral para sa Sambayanan PUP (SAMASA PUP) Chairperson Ronjay Mendiola, SAMASA PUP CAL Vice Chairperson Krystal Anjela Gamboa, and CAL Student Council President and Councilor Colleen Faye Monge and Ron Christian Tagle also had the spotlight with their solidarity speeches to discuss pressing issues inside and outside the university, such as the National Polytechnic University (NPU) Bill, Palestinians’ fight for their national liberation against the Israeli government, and Charter Change.
The ceremony also displayed various performers from different talents, such as drag artist Edsa Xxtra, spoken poetry duo Renz and Bills, the band Esremborak, and vocal and dance groups TM Eskala, Tulos Baybay, and The Dramatics.
To wrap up the closing of the said event, students who participated in the Character Parade on February 5 were awarded to students Mark Vincent Delima and John Basti De Guzman from CAL, alongside Ugnayan ng Talino at Kagalingan (UTAK), PUP Literature Arts, Culture, and Society, and other organizations for their contributions to the success of the commemoration of the said event.
