In a groundbreaking initiative, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) - College of Accountancy and Finance (CAF) successfully organized and hosted the First Finance and Accounting Conference (FAC). This two-day online research conference, held from May 25 to 26, 2023, marked a significant milestone in the field of finance and accounting, with PUP leading the way.
Collaborating with the Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP) and National University (NU), PUP facilitated the virtual conference, which focused on the theme “Breakthroughs in Accounting, Business, and Finance Through Research Amidst Changes in Business and Accounting Sustainability, Reporting, and Education.”
The conference brought together esteemed researchers, academicians, professionals, scholars, and students in the business, finance, and accounting fields. The event served as a platform for knowledge exchange, motivating attendees and participants and equipping them with fresh insights and ideas in areas such as accounting, auditing, business sustainability, and education.
The conference began with an opening address by Dr. Ryan C. Roque, CPA, the conference chair, followed by a keynote speech from Dr. Florenz C. Tugas, CPA, CISA, the editor-in-chief and managing editor of The Dividends: nACPAE Journal of Accounting Research. Dr. Tugas emphasized the importance of research and encouraged attendees to actively engage in research activities.
Mr. Jimmy D. Disquetado, CPA, a PUP alumnus and business services and assurance partner at PwC Philippines, also shared his experiences and emphasized the significance of accountants’ involvement and cooperation in research within various sectors of finance and accounting.
Inspirational messages were delivered by Dr. Jackie D. Urrutia, Director of PUP Research Management Office; Dr. Angeles A. De Guzman, CPA, Dean of the College of Business Education at the TIP -Quezon City; and Maria Louella P. Sta. Maria, MPA, Dean of the College of Business and Accountancy at NU-Manila.
The highlight of the conference was the presentation of research papers by participants from different institutions. These presentations sparked engaging discussions and received valuable feedback from peers and experts in the field of business, finance, and accounting. Dr. Jonathan P. Binaluyo and Dr. Rellita D. Paez served as the reactors during the two-day conference.
At the conclusion of the event, several outstanding research papers were recognized. Mr. James Robert Aguila, CPA, MBA, from one of the “Big 4” accounting firms in the Philippines, received the Best Paper award for his research on “Engineering A Virtual Internship Experience in Management Consulting Practice Through a Project Management Approach.”
The second-best paper was awarded to the team from Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU), titled “Atoms: Model of Acceptance of Using QR Code as An Innovative Non-Contact Service for Quick Service Restaurants at SM Fairview, Quezon City.” The third Best Paper was awarded to another research paper from OLFU, entitled “Factors Influencing Students’ Utilization of Online Payment as A Payment Method.”
In addition to the Best Paper awards, the conference also recognized the Best Conference Presenters. Ms. Ria Fajilago, MBA, was awarded for her paper on “Digital Technology and Financial Mobile Services of Wage-Earner Workers in State Universities and Colleges in The National Capital Region.” Mark Anecito R. Perlas, CPA, MBA, received recognition for his paper titled “Academic and Certified Public Accountant Licensure Examination Performances of Accountancy Graduates of a State University in The Philippines.”
The First FAC was then concluded with the closing remarks delivered by Dr. Julieta G. Fonte, CPA, the Dean of PUP College of Accountancy and Finance (CAF).
Looking forward, PUPCAF is already gearing up for future research-related events and conferences, seeking to build on the success of the First FAC.
