The PUP Center for Philippine Studies under Research Institute for Culture and Language launched the Hugpuan: 1st PUP Center for Philippines Studies Conference with the theme, “Indigenous Knowledge and Interdisciplinary in the Time of Crisis” on October 20-22, 2021.
Dr. Epifanio San Juan Jr., from Philippine Cultural Studies Center, and Professor Emeritus in English, Comparative Literature, & Ethnic Studies in Washington State University, Dr. Ramon Guillermo from the University of the Philippines Diliman, and Dr. Jun Cruz, a writer and professor from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines served as the keynote speakers in the event.
Dr. San Juan Jr. in his keynote speech focused on “Interdisiplinaridad sa Araling Pambansa,” Dr. Guillermo discussed the “Kongkretong Pagsusuri sa Kongkretong Kalagayan: Ang Ugnayan ng Philippine Studies sa mga Kilusang Panlipunan,” while Dr. Cruz taled about the “Ang Panitikan ng Rehiyon Bilang Pambansang Panitikan.”
According to Prof. Jomar Adaya, the head organizer of the event, the conference aims to bring together researchers and scholars interested in the study of Philippine social and cultural history and traditions and promote mutual awareness among the people of the world through the Center’s activities such as research conferences, lectures, workshops, seminars, and training.
Prof. Adaya also mentioned the purpose and contribution of PUP Center for Philippine Studies. “Isang pagtatangka ang Center for Philippine Studies na makapag-ambag sa bukas na talastasang pambansa tungo sa pagbuo ng repostoryo ng mga saliksik sa Philippine Studies na magagamit ng hindi lamang ng akademya kung hindi higit ng publiko. Pangunahing tunguhin ng sentro na makapaglungsad ng program sa pananaliksik, adbokasiya, at kolaborasyon sa iba’t ibang institusyon na higit na nakatuon sa multi-disiplinaryo at inter-disiplinaryong lapit sa pag-aaral ng lipunan, at pangkulturang penomena na umuugat sa reyalidad at karanasang Filipino.”
The conference was participated by faculty members, students, and researchers from different institutions in the country.
The term “Hugpuan” means “Isang ugnayan na nagdudugtong, nagkakapit o higit, nagkakaisang-diwa sa kabila ng pagkakaiba ng mga pinagmumulang larangan at komunidad.”
