The PUP College of Computer and Information Sciences (CCIS) and the PUP College of Engineering (COE) co-hosted the inaugural Amazon Web Services (AWS) Student Community Day in the Philippines on April 17, 2024, held at the Bulwagang Balagtas.
Occurring for the first time in the Philippines, the event focused on addressing the gap between academia and industry by emphasizing relevant skills and career advice, while encouraging students to explore cloud computing as a viable career path, adhering to the occasion’s theme of “The Academic Advocacy of Bridging IT Industry Gap”.
The first-time event aims to cultivate a strong sense of community among Cloud Club members, fostering collaboration, networking, and knowledge exchange, launch and sustain a mentorship program effectively, connecting students with seasoned professionals who can offer guidance in their AWS journey. Expanding the event’s reach to students outside the club, it is envisioned to promote diversity and inclusiveness within the AWS community, and encourage attendees to envision their future careers in cloud computing and inspire them to explore innovative solutions using AWS.
Led by Cloud Captains of the AWS Cloud Club-PUP, the AWS Student Community Day is attended by members of the AWS Cloud Club members Philippines, student delegates from all over the country, online attendees and face-to-face, creating an inclusive and collaborative learning environment for everyone.
Esteemed speakers graced the event with their insights in tow. Speakers include College of Computer and Information Sciences Dean, Dr. Benilda Eleonor V. Comendador who shared her opening remarks; AWS Cloud Club University Captain, AWS Cloud Club Regional Captain, and CCIS Student Isaeus B. Guiang also gave his take regarding the occasion; Country Manager of AWS Philippines, Jerry Jimenez Bongco presented his welcome notes.
Further, AWS Ambassador Raphael Jambalos discussed anecdotal and informative points in his talk “A Day in a Life as a Cloud Developer and How to Become One”; Senior Solutions Architect Paul Sears then raised several key points in his “Into the Cloud: Lessons on becoming an AWS Solutions Architect”; six (6) University Captains of the AWS Cloud Club then conferred to explore the topic of Community Building; AWS Cloud Club Co-Captain revealed to the listeners the “Basic of the Basics to AWS”; Edukasyon.ph Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) and the AWS Hero for Community Raphael Quisumbing talked about the “AWS Community of the Philippines” and AWS Hero for Machine Learning Mr. Arvin Lat concluded the event with his closing remarks.
Vice-President and Chief Technology Officer of Amazon Dr. Werner Vogels appeared for a Fireside Chat to share his annual predictions and the role of the students in the growing Cloud technology with Jerry Bongco serving as the moderator, enhancing the event’s prestige while enriching the learning experience for attendees. His presence underscores the importance of industry-academia partnerships and reinforces the transformative impact of cloud computing on the future of technology and innovation.
The Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud Club Community Day (formerly known as Student Symposia) is an annual student-led event held worldwide which consist of technical discussions, workshops, and hands-on labs led by expert AWS users and industry leaders from around the world. It provides a peer-to-peer educational experience, helping aspiring developers with a venue for them to acquire AWS knowledge from one another. The first Filipino event was joined by 700 individual comprised of PUP, non-PUP, and online attendees.
