Protect and restore oceans, seas, and marine ecosystems by curbing pollution, preventing overfishing, conserving coastal habitats, and regulating harmful practices—recognizing the ocean’s vital role in global biodiversity, food security, and climate regulation.
We have organized and supported different events aimed to offer educational programmes on the following areas:
fresh-water ecosystems (water irrigation practices, water management/conservation) for local or national communities
sustainable management of fisheries, aquaculture and tourism
raise awareness about overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices
Lessons learned are turned into sustainable actions. We are gradually working to support and/or organise events aimed to work on the following:
promote conservation and sustainable utilisation of the oceans, seas, lakes, rivers and marine resources
ensure that food on campus that comes from aquatic ecosystems is sustainably harvested
work directly (research and/or engagement with industries) to maintain and extend existing ecosystems and their biodiversity, of both plants and animals, especially ecosystems under threat
work directly (research and/or engagement with industries) on technologies or practices that enable marine industry to minimise or prevent damage to aquatic ecosystems
Water sensitive waste disposal
We have developed the university action plan to reduce plastic waste on campus. OVPA Memorandum No. 20, series of 2024, titled the “Prohibition on the use of single-use plastics (SUP) during weekends at PUP” is a preparation for the full transition to paper-based alternatives. We aim to eliminate plastic consumption in the campus and prevent solid waste pollution reaching the aquatic ecosystem.
The University also monitors the health of aquatic ecosystems, develops and supports programs and incentives that encourage and maintain good aquatic stewardship practices, and collaborates with the local community, e.g. through partnerships, in efforts to maintain shared aquatic ecosystems.
