Ar. Rey Solis Gabitan, a senior faculty member of the College of Architecture and Fine Arts was appointed Chairman of the Board of Consultants (BoC) of the National Building Code Development Office under the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). Said post is an important one tasked to review and recommend revisions and amendments such are needed to update the 39-year old code. As of the moment, the code needs salient amendments on certain provisions especially on the scope of practice of relative professions engaged in the design and construction industry aside from new and emerging technologies, systems and best practices adopted not only locally but globally as well as mainstreaming Disaster Resiliency Standards in the built environment.
This new post is rare since Ar. Gabitan is the first Architect in the country to be accorded such an appointment in this august body of experts and professionals rendering advisory and recommendatory services to this cabinet level department in our government. He is a licensed Architect and Environmental Planner as well as a holder of two Diploma courses in Urban Design under the auspices of the World Bank Institute based in Washington.
A noted academic and lecturer in Architecture and Planning, he is currently an Assistant Professor in CAFA teaching Architectural Design, Planning and Comprehensive Courses and also a ranking national officer of the Integrated and Accredited Professional Organization of Architects in the country, the United Architects of the Philippines being its Executive Vice President.
