Seven (7) faculty members from the College of Architecture, Design, and Built Environment of the University’s Main Campus completed the Training for Design for Greater Efficiency (DfGE) organized by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) last December 2022 at Taguig City. As this new semester commences, better opportunities open for PUPians and its community through this new achievement. This gave the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) the prestige of being the first academic arm of the IFC to deliver the DfGE program in the country.
Ar. Jocelyn A. Rivera-Lutap, CADBE Dean; EnP Ibylou B. Golla, Chairperson of the Department of Environmental Planning; Ar. Emilie T. Garcia, Ar. Melba A. Paual, Ar. Ted Villamor G. Inocencio, Ar./EnP Melodia R. Sampan, and Ar. Marie Angelie B. Velasquez successfully received their certification as trainors to deliver DfGE. Specifically, they were trained to use the EDGE app, which would then be initially taught to CADBE students.
“Other than being the first Philippine University to have accredited trainers, PUP will be known as the first Philippine University to be allied with other international universities who offer the DfGE curriculum. So, this is really a wonderful opportunity to showcase the strength and capabilities of our university,” Dean Lutap-Rivera shared in an email interview.
DfGE explained DfGE is a course aimed at senior building design students and working professionals (i.e., architecture, structural and building services engineering), offered online and in a university setting. DfGE covers the fundamentals of energy and resource efficiency measures in building design from a technical and commercial perspective. It will be offered to students through affiliated universities, such as PUP, as a 20-hour course.
The course uses case studies and examples to teach students how to design for resource-efficiency and how to sell those designs in a commercial setting. DfGE is offered by IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, to encourage resource efficiency in the construction sector. Designers trained through DfGE are then able to develop the skills, knowledge, and attitudes to support the built environment’s move onto a low-carbon path.
It is pioneered by the IFC, a member of the World Bank group of companies. The program is supported by the IFC-developed EDGE App, a tool to help evaluate the optimum resource-efficient strategies to implement and estimate the incremental cost of green building.
Benefits for PUPians The seven accredited trainers who took and passed the training will be allowed to train students. The curriculum of DfGE could be incorporated in existing sustainability subjects offered by the college or teach it as a stand-alone subject to other interesting parties as deemed appropriate by IFC. Students will have the opportunity to learn in a richer academic environment from professors trained in designing for resource efficiency.
“Training for DfGE is continuous. More faculty members from CADBE and other colleges who offer sustainable design can become trainers too. The system can also be used for our own university so we can be a model of a design for resource-efficiency towards having green building/campus,” EnP Golla explained in an email correspondence.
CADBE looks forward to incorporating DfGE in its current learning setup. Indeed, valuable opportunities open as our offices and colleges endeavor to build deeper partnerships with various international and local organizations. All these for the betterment of quality education in Sintang Paaralan.
