On August 7, the Free Wi-Fi Internet Access in Public Places Project was launched as part of the partnership between the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Luzon Cluster 3 and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP). PUP campuses located in Bansud, Oriental Mindoro and Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro, primary recipients of the project, are now Wi-Fi connected, as reported in their Facebook post. The said project aims to accelerate economic, social, and educational opportunities and reduce the digital divide under National Connectivity Program of the government. Under this partnership, the institutions would work towards expanding site coverages and internet access in public places within the locality, pursue digital literacy, and promote more responsible use of the internet. DICT will undertake installation of units, maintenance and monitoring of the same to ensure the sustainability of the project. The recipient PUP campuses, on the other hand, will shoulder electricity costs, identify a site coordinator to render administrative and general support, and secure the installation. The Wi-Fi is now ready for use, serving Bansud and Sablayan campuses.
