The PUP College of Social Sciences and Development (CSSD) Department of Psychology held the ICAN Extension Program and lecture session with house parents to help them gain insights into the multifaceted development of children and adolescents through the lens of psychological theories, particularly on the social, emotional, physical, and psychological changes. It took place at ICAN Center for Children Philippines, San Mateo, Rizal on August 17.
Hosted by Instructor Adrian R. Guinto, this event centered on underscoring the importance of the house parents’ roles in nurturing and guiding the youth in their care. The agenda included expert presentations, interactive discussions, and Q&A sessions, all designed to foster an engaging learning environment among the participants.
Professors Dr. Pricila Marzan and Dr. Marilou Francisco served as the facilitators and lecturers of the session.
Dr. Marzan, in her presentation, discussed the Theoretical Frameworks of Development where she introduced the stages of life span development, and the key psychological theories related to child and adolescent development.
Among the theories she talked about were Sigmund Freud’s Psychosexual Development, Erik Erikson’s stages of Psychosocial Development and Jean Piaget’s Cognitive Development theory, illustrating how each provides a structure towards understanding the growth and changes children undergo while also emphasizing its connection between individual growth and social context.
Following her theoretical lessons, she delved on the topic of youth development such as Social Development where she emphasized that peer relationships in childhood and adolescence is important as they become increasingly important as they grow, Physical Development where she highlighted the rapid changes that occur during childhood and adolescence and the role of parents towards promoting proper physical health and nutrition for the overall development of their children, and Psychological Development, examining cognitive growth and mental health and how cognitive abilities evolve and how peer interactions can enhance or hinder this development. Statistics and strategies were provided to give context and understanding towards addressing these different aspects.
After Dr. Marzan, Dr. Francisco took the stage to facilitate breakout sessions where children interacted and engaged with both lecturers to talk about school and the ICAN institution. She, alongside Marzin, also administered diagnostic instruments to gain live experiences and valuable insights into their emotional and psychological development so far.
To end the session, the duo conducted a Q&A segment, where house parents posed questions regarding specific situations they encountered. The presiding experts then offered informed responses and advice, imparting the need of consistent communication and support in fostering positive development. They are then left with practical strategies and insights to better support the children in their care.
Department of Psychology Chairperson Associate Professor Lorraine Charmayne Manansala ended the entire program by delivering her closing remarks, expressing gratitude towards the organizers and participants. She remarked this is a starting point for meaningful engagement, collaboration, and discussions on building a strong partnership to identify crucial steps for improving the community’s condition.
