AKSYON KABATAAN webinar series held its last session on June 6, 2021, with the theme “BOBOTO KABATAAN: Empowering Youth’s Role in Social Reforms thru Election Education” bolstered by two excellent resource speakers, Mr. Rosh Chrisean Castro and Ms. Zyra Nikka Indap.
Mr. Rosh Chrisean Castro, Education Associate at MFI Polytechnic Institute- Pasig City started his talk on “Voter’s Education and the Selfie Generation: Empowering Youth’s Role in Social Reforms” with the question, “Paano kung lumikha ng batas o polisiya ang pamahalaan na ang layunin ay lubos na higpitan ang political o cultural censorship ng ating mga selfie o ang mga larawang ibinabahagi natin sa internet?” where he discussed how social media mobilize people and initiate resolution regarding the contemporary social issues.
Castro also underlined the role of youth’s engagement in social reforms. He pointed how important it is to be committed when it comes to civic engagement. According to him, leaders that must be voted shall be the ones who value life, social justice, and human dignity, possess good records and reputation, and are a concern to the environment. “Cast your votes and let your voice be heard. Vote for competent candidates,” he said.
Subsequently, Ms. Zyra Nikka Indap from Muntinlupa National Highschool emphasized in her talk the role of voter education in election education. Proceeding, she spotlighted the importance of being aware of the current events and issues circulating our nation— the importance of good access to information, especially during the election. Indap also agreed to the aforementioned attributes of a good leader stated by Castro.
She also added that it is better to check the history of the candidate first, including the person’s character, proposed laws, supported regulations and platforms, and stance regarding present issues. She also reminded everyone to be critical and to "check privilege first" in all ways. Dr. Minna L. Comuyog, Dean of PUP College of Education, completed the event with her closing remarks, extending her gratitude to organizers and resource speakers. "I pray to the Lord that you will be able to apply what you learned on these webinars in building the future grounded by the pillar of goodness. Maraming maraming salamat po, sabay sabay natin isagaw, Aksyon Kabataan, ngayon na!" Dr. Comuyog said.
