The Department of Humanities and Philosophy (DHP) under the College of Arts and Letters (CAL) successfully rolled out Phase 2 of its Extension Program LET’s GIVE (Gender, Instructions, Values, Environment) held on November 9, November 16, and December 7, 2024, respectively at the M.H. Del Pilar Campus.
The objectives of this year’s implementation are about honing leadership, critical thinking, craft-making, and other life-essential skills of the beneficiaries—the community of Barangay 635, Sampaloc, Manila.
Leading all the sessions were DHP faculty while members of the student association Societas Philosophiae, the official academic student organization of the said department, served as the master of ceremonies and co-facilitators.
“Sana ay hindi magsawa ang PUP sa pagtulong sa aming Barangay (I hope PUP never gets tired of helping our Barangay),” Barangay 635 head Hon. Danilo San Bueno shared as he opened the three-day extension activity. It was followed by Extension leader Gary Musa who imparted words of gratitude to the partner barangay, DHP faculty and students.
Day 1 activities focused on social media literacy among teens which was led by Patrice Tabon, followed by leadership through stories of Ang Tsinelas ni Inoy and Dyarannn! narrated to the kids and a processing spearheaded by professors Leonardo Dela Cruz and Aira Lu. Meanwhile, the crafting barangay policy session for adults and Brgy. 635 officials were teamed up by faculty Atty. Severo Brillantes, Dino Cabrera and Alex Henon. Coloring and drawing activities for toddlers were led by volunteer Philosophy students.
For the second day, DHP Chairperson Dr. Jayson Jimenez opened it with a warm welcome to the participants where he emphasized the importance of these proceedings, particularly for communities such as them.
The day provided trainings such as leadership through storytelling for kids and teens were conducted by faculty members Christine Aquende, Werllie Bueno, Ronel De Loyola, and Andaman Aliman, joined by the Philosophy student Irish Biscocho. Aquende, Bueno, and Biscocho narrated the story Ang Magic ni Inay while De Loyola and Aliman collaboratively told the story of Super Bagyo!
Simultaneously, the second part of the barangay policy crafting session continued, which was then administered by the faculty team of Brillantes, Henon, and Philosophy alumni Atty. Chyler Garma. Also, coloring activities for toddlers were supervised by the student-volunteers.
On the third and final day of the program, Brgy. 635 Sangguniang Kabataan Chair Gayle Villaflores delivered an inspiring message where she remarked that they have learned a lot from these sessions and hope that these will continue, followed by an icebreaker where teen and kid beneficiaries presented their special dance number.
The team of Brillantes, Henon, Cabrera, and Garma, as well as Captain San Bueno, his constituents, and parents took charge of the last day as they finalized the Barangay resolution, suggesting the enforcement of rules on proper sidewalk vending. Then, after this, Tabon proceeded with her watercolor session while Lu instructed the bracelet and earrings-making for kids and teens.
The attendees, to close the event and as part of their annual gift-giving tradition, received Christmas gift packs from the DHP.
Several attendees, upon the end of the program, expressed their appreciation for this occasion. Nanay Lalabels, a parent shared that they have learned so many lessons, as well as blessing, while Celeste, a child beneficiary added “Masaya po lagi ang drawing at mababait na ate at kuya sa PUP tapos marami pang drawing, kuwento, and art.”

Following the success of the second phase, DHP announced that the 2025 implementation will be the third and concluding phase of its Extension Program for Barangay 635, centering its activities on Values and Environment.
This project highlights PUP’s strategic goals pertaining to strengthened sustainable and impactful extension programs, showcasing its commitment on helping Filipinos by exhibiting a strong sense of community through volunteerism, outreach, and community engagements.
