The PUP National Service Training Program (NSTP) and PUP Sandiwa conducted a two-part webinar with the theme “Act Responsible: Think Renewable: Promoting Sustainable Consumerism for a Cleaner and Safer Environment,” which tackled the essence of smart consumerism on February 27.
The event commenced with opening remarks from Dr. Rovelina B. Jacolbia, Director of PUP NSTP- Sta. Mesa, and was followed by messages from the PUP President Dr. Manuel M. Muhi and PUP Vice President for Student Affairs and Services Dr. Zenaida R. Sarmiento.
“Regardless of our position in the academe, I will always be supportive to endeavors like this because as human being, I am fully aware of our task to preserve our nature for our children, and their would-be children,” Dr. Muhi said.
In the first part of the lecture, Ms. Glaiza F. Gavarra, the adviser of Youth for Environment in School Organization (YES-O) and a Teacher III in Sta. Domingo Integrated High School discussed the primary concepts and practical ways towards environmental conservation. According to Ms. Gavarra, people’s negligence towards the environment will cause a greater problem in the longer run.
On the second part, Asst. Prof. Jimmy M. Fernando, Chief of the Center for Environmental Studies, presented actual data of the annual consumptions made by the industries, companies, and households in the Philippines, particularly in terms of water, rice, electricity, and oil. In his talk, Asst. Prof. Fernando also emphasized that there is a need to scrutinize where to put solar panels so that those will not occupy too much space, particularly the land intended for agriculture.
“Kapag nasa kamay ng magsasaka ang kontrol sa lupa, nasa kamay niya ang kontrol sa produksyon; lumikha ng maraming produkto para lahat ay makinabang,” he said.
Mr. Fernando ended his discussion with a plea to stop devastating the environment.
The event was officially concluded by the PUP-NSTP CWTS Chief Joey T. Danting through his closing remarks where he said:
“We believe as Iskolar ng Bayan, we should not only be engaged to political activism but let us all become environmental activists. Walang maliit na hakbang kung tayo’y magsisimula nang maaga. Be an advocate in your precious way, Act Responsible, Think Renewable.”
The webinar is the first activity of PUP NSTP and PUP Sandiwa for 2022.
