A total of 150 educators from the Philippines, Malaysia, Nigeria, India, Argentina, Kingdom of Morroco, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates participated in the OUSapin 2024: International Knowledge Exchanges in Open, Flexible and Distance Learning held on January 27, 2024 via Zoom.
The event, organized by the Polytechnic University of the Philippines Open University System (PUP OUS) and The International Institute of Knowledge Management (TIIKM) in Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, Sri Lanka, aimed to provide an avenue for educators, researchers, and practitioners from diverse global backgrounds to exchange innovative ideas, best practices, and cutting-edge research on the field of open and distance education.
To start the program, University President Dr. Manuel M. Muhi and TIIKM Co-Founder and Managing Director Mr. Isanka P. Gamage delivered their respective welcome remarks. Dr. Muhi and Mr. Gamage expressed their gratitude for successfully organizing the event and emphasized the importance of such collaborations. It was followed by a ceremonial signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) of academic partnership to formalize collaborations. Representatives from PUP, Dr. Joanna Karla C. Bien, the Director of PUP Office of International Affairs and Ms. Chanika Gunathilake, the Head of TIIKMInternational Relations delivered their respective messages.
Afterwards, parallel sessions were introduced where six experts from PUP OUS TIIKM, and Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia served as speakers.
In the Knowledge Management session, Prof. Chandra Embuldeniya, the Chairperson of the Technology Development and Innovations Arm, National Science Foundation in Sri Lanka presented “Best Practices in Knowledge Management in Sri Lanka”; Asst. Prof. Jerome P. Dumlao, the Head of Instructional Materials Development Office of PUP OUS discussed “Knowledge Management in Open and Distance Learning”; and Dr. Ma. Pamela Grace C. Muhi, Course Specialist also from PUP OUS tackled “Knowledge Management in Public Administration and Governance”.
Meanwhile, in session B focusing on Media and Communication Studies, Asst. Prof. Kim Bernard G. Fajardo, the Chairperson of the PUP Department of Broadcast Communication discussed “Media Historiography in the Philippines: A Critical Turn”; Dr. Sara Chinnasamy, a political and social media analyst and faculty of Communication and Media Studies in Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia focused on “Transcending Disinformation: Towards Responsible Media Consumption”; and Atty. Katherine Rose T. Merza, a media practitioner from the Philippine’s ABS-CBN, and Course Specialist from PUP OUS shared her insights about the “Trends in Media Laws and Ethics in the Philippines”.
With meaningful topics and discussion from experts and professionals from different countries, the event was able to address common challenges in flexible learning modality and provide participants with insights on effective strategies and new pedagogical approaches.
The half-day event was concluded with a closing remark from PUP OUS Executive Director Dr. Carmencita L. Castolo where she thanked all the organizers, participants, and partner institutions, and hoped for more future collaborations between education institutions.
