The former Center for Social History (CSH) under the Research Institute for Culture and Language of the Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension, Planning, and Development is now renamed the Center for Philippine Studies (CPS). Founded by the nationalist educator and former PUP president Dr. Nemesio Prudente, CSH is one of the established centers that began as a research institute in 1986. Renaming the Center in 2021 is not a simple shift in direction, nor does it disregard the history, success, and production of the former Center, but rather to further strengthen and promote the convergence of fields of knowledge and practices that cross communities. The PUP Center for Philippine Studies is an attempt to contribute to national and international discourses towards developing a repository of research and creative production in Philippine Studies that can be utilized not only by the academe but more so by the public.
During the pandemic crisis, the transition of activities into the digital space has become a significant challenge for students and teachers. As a research center, it is best to meet such challenges by launching programs that will provide development opportunities. One of the Center’s primary mandates is to develop a repository of research and creative production in Philippine Studies that is freely accessible and beneficial to the public. With the academic institutions’ current state of leaning into the digital space due to the pandemic crisis, there is an increasing need for online teaching resources and research materials. It is also a form of democratization of knowledge that should be promoted by universities such as PUP that provide services to the greater majority of Filipinos.
“Sudlanan” is a Cebuano word meaning storage or container. It is rooted in the word “sulod” which means inside. “Sudlanan,” in the project’s context, is a vessel of knowledge highlighting Filipino ideas, culture, and society. Part of the Center’s advocacy is to feature local knowledge and perspectives that bind academic fields and communities. Sudlanan, is the Center’s first step in developing a repository of research and creative production.
This project is also an attempt to contribute to the promotion of Philippine Studies to create a “critical mass” or critical readers, academics, and the public that is part of what Dr. Ramon Guillermo called an “autonomous community” of Philippine Studies that communicate on a national level and will thus become a conduit to build a strong network of other centers of Philippine and Southeast Asian Studies across the globe.

Pandemic Literature from the Philippines and Japan: Narratives of Hope, Resilience and Essential Insights in Overcoming the Covid-19 Crisis was conceptualized from the idea of the current global pandemic that quarantined, isolated, and hindered our social mobility, but not our creativity. The anthology features selected creative works about the pandemic from the Philippines and Japan. The Philippine Society of Young Educators of Languages and the Arts initiated the project in 2020 with funding support from The Japan Foundation Manila, in partnership with the PUP Center for Language and Literary Studies (CLLS) and the PUP Center for Social History (CSH) with an aim of gathering different experiences to collectively remember in the near future.
